I clutched a crumpled printed schedule and a half-spilled cup of coffee, moving from room 214 to 217 back to back: first Ms. Lopez, his AP English teacher, then Mr. Henderson, his 11th grade U.S. History teacher. What I saw in those two 15-minute meetings drove home something I’ve been watching unfold for a year now, something most parents don’t talk about enough.

Ms. Lopez pulled up my son’s latest research paper on her desktop, the one he wrote about teen social media use and voting turnout. She explained she spent three afternoons of her own time this past summer taking a free course on integrating AI tools into the classroom, and she now requires all her students to use them for one major project each semester. Not to write the paper for them, she clarified, but to handle the grunt work: pulling a list of relevant primary sources from 10 years of research journals, summarizing long studies to cut down on reading time, generating a rough outline from the student’s messy notes. My son, who has ADHD and often gets stuck just organizing his ideas before he even starts writing, got an A- on the paper. He told me after it was the first big assignment he didn’t procrastinate on for a week, because he didn’t have to spend three nights scrolling aimlessly through Google Scholar just to find sources that fit his topic.

Mr. Henderson has been teaching at the school for 26 years, and he has a “no AI allowed” sign taped to the front of his desk. When I sat down, he pulled out my son’s most recent project on the New Deal, a 5-page essay. He got a C. He told me my son turned in a disorganized outline, missed the deadline by two days, and left out three key required sources. What he didn’t mention was that my son couldn’t use any AI tool to organize his notes. Mr. Henderson bans all use, even for note-taking or outlining, says any use is cheating and makes kids lazy. My son tried to do it all by hand, sorting 17 pages of scribbled notes he took during lectures, got overwhelmed, and couldn’t pull it together in time. When I asked Mr. Henderson if he’d considered learning to teach responsible use, he shrugged and said, “Kids need to learn to do it the hard way. We didn’t have these gadgets when I was in school, and I turned out fine.”

I’ve talked to more than a dozen teachers and parents in our district over the past six months for the PTA parent advocacy committee I joined, and that split between Ms. Lopez and Mr. Henderson is everywhere. About a third of the teachers in our district have taken the free AI training the district offers, and they’re figuring out how to weave responsible use into their existing lessons. Another third say they have no interest, and they’re just banning it entirely. The last third say they don’t have time to learn something new, or they don’t know where to start, so they ignore it entirely.

What’s scary is how fast that gap is widening. A teacher friend of mine who teaches 10th grade math at a school across town told me last month that she lets her students use AI to generate practice quizzes from their class notes, and to explain confusing concepts in different language if the textbook explanation doesn’t click. Her students’ average end-of-semester test scores went up 11% last year, compared to the same classes taught by teachers who banned AI in the same building. It’s not just that kids are getting better grades, either. The kids who learn to use it early are learning a skill they’ll need for every job they’ll ever have after graduation. If you graduate high school in 2026 and you’ve never used AI to organize a project, fact-check a claim, or solve a tricky problem, you’re already behind the kid who learned how to do that in 9th grade.

It’s not that the teachers who resist are bad teachers. A lot of them are overwhelmed. They’ve had new testing mandates, new curriculum rules, and a dozen other new initiatives thrown at them over the past decade, on top of already overloaded schedules and underpaid salaries. A lot of them just don’t have the time or energy to learn another whole new system. Some of them have had bad experiences with kids cheating, and that’s fair – cheating is a real problem when AI is used incorrectly. But the answer isn’t to ban it entirely and pretend it doesn’t exist. That just leaves kids unprepared.

For parents who are looking at this same split in their kid’s school, there are small concrete things you can do that don’t require fighting the whole school board tomorrow. First, talk to your kid about ground rules for using AI at home, and walk through what responsible use looks like with a concrete example. If they’re stuck on an algebra problem, the rule is they have to try to solve it first, then use AI to see where they went wrong and explain the step they missed, not just copy the answer. If they’re writing an essay, they can use it to make an outline from their notes, but they have to write every sentence of the essay themselves. That takes 10 minutes to walk through once, and it sets clear expectations.

Second, if your kid has a learning difference – like ADHD, dyslexia, or any other processing issue – ask your school’s special education department to approve AI tools as an accommodation. A lot of schools already allow this, even if the general classroom teacher bans it for everyone else, and it can cut down on so much unnecessary stress for kids who already struggle to keep up.

Third, if you’re active in the PTA or your local parent group, push the district to offer short, low-effort training for teachers instead of long, mandatory all-day in-services. Most teachers don’t have an extra three days in the summer to learn AI, but a lot will do a 15-minute weekly tutorial they can watch on their own time after school, that shows them one simple trick to use AI with their existing lesson plans.

Last weekend, my son used AI to study for his learner’s permit test. He uploaded the whole 50-page state driver’s handbook, and asked it to generate 10 new practice questions every night, focused on the road sign rules he kept getting wrong. He got 9 out of 10 right on his last practice quiz, and he’s less stressed about taking the test than I was when I studied with a crumpled paper practice book 25 years ago. When I thought about that, I thought about what Mr. Henderson said – that he turned out fine without it. That’s true, but fine isn’t the same as prepared. The gap isn’t going to close overnight. A lot of districts are moving too slow to train teachers, and a lot of teachers are still hesitant to try something new. Right now, every month that goes by, the gap gets a little wider, and the kids who can’t access AI learning at school or at home fall a little further behind. I don’t have a solution for the whole system. But I’m teaching my son how to use the tool responsibly, and I’m talking to other parents about what I saw at conferences. That’s enough for right now.
