For me, that moment was strange. I had spent years watching him come home from school with worksheets that were exactly the same as every other kid’s. The idea that a computer could sense his hesitation felt either brilliant or deeply creepy, sometimes both in the same minute.

We pulled our son out of public school last fall. He’s not a “problem” kid. He just reads slowly. In a class of twenty-six, that made him anxious. He’d finish a page and forget the sentence, not because he couldn’t understand it, but because he was busy checking whether other kids had already turned the page. By second grade he had started saying “I hate reading” at bedtime, which is a special kind of heartbreak for a parent.

That stuck with me. In a traditional classroom, my son used to raise his hand in quiet desperation. The teacher was usually busy helping another student. By the time she reached him, he had done half the problem wrong and had to erase his work. At Alpha, the feedback loop is immediate. There’s no shame in “not getting it yet,” because the machine doesn’t sigh.

But I’m also a parent, not a tech evangelist. Over the next few weeks, I kept circling back to one question: Is this actually learning, or is it just personalized drilling?

The answer, I think, is both.

The academic block at Alpha is short—roughly two hours. The rest of the day is project time. During our visit, a group of kids were building a bridge out of popsicle sticks and tape. One boy was in charge of “research,” which meant he had opened a video about bridge design on his Chromebook. A girl was measuring the gap with a ruler. Another boy was taping sticks together in a way that would definitely collapse. No adult told them to stop. The guide walked over, looked at the bridge, and said, “Have you tested it yet?” The boy said, “It’s not done.” The guide stood there for a second and then said, “I’ll come back in five minutes.” She didn’t fix anything. She didn’t praise them. She just made sure they kept going.

This is the part that convinced me, more than the adaptive software. The AI handles the gap between what a kid knows and what he’s ready to learn next. That gives adults time to do what adults do best: press gently, ask questions, and let kids make physical messes.

At home, I noticed a shift. My son started asking for “the computer school” on weekends. Not to do math. To build things. He came home with a prototype for a “garbage grabber” made out of a ruler, a clothespin, and rubber bands. He called it a “project.” In public school, he would have called that “a game.” But that’s really the point. The school had rebranded learning as something you do, not something you sit through.

Still, I have worries. The whole model depends on a child being willing to sit with a screen and not get distracted. My son is eight. Some days, the screen wins. He’ll click through a video quiz quickly just to get to the next activity. I watched him guess on a question, miss it, and shrug. There’s no accountability except a progress bar. A human teacher might have said, “Take your time, you know this.” The AI just said “not correct” and gave him another hint. He didn’t care.

I mentioned this to Rachel. She said the guides monitor that kind of behavior too. They look for attempt patterns—things like a kid who answers too fast or skips a video. Then they’ll pull that kid aside for a conversation. She told me, “We don’t want them to do work. We want them to try.”

I’m still not sure that works every time. Some kids need a teacher to look them in the eye and say, “I expected better.” That doesn’t happen through a headset.

But here’s what I’ve actually changed at home because of this experience. I stopped making my son read for twenty minutes at night. We do ten minutes, then he tells me what he read. Not because ten is better than twenty, but because ten minutes of focused reading with immediate feedback is better than twenty minutes of him watching the clock. I also started using a kitchen timer for homework. If he finishes a problem set in eight minutes, he’s done. The timer, not his mood, decides the pace. It sounds simple, but it took a strange school visit to show me that my son didn’t hate learning. He hated waiting for the rest of the class.

I don’t know if we’ll enroll full-time. The tuition is high, and some days I worry he’ll grow up thinking that being smart just means moving up a progress bar. But I can’t argue with what I saw: a kid who used to say “I’m bad at reading” now says “The program says I’m getting better at main ideas.” He still spills juice on the table. He still can’t find his shoes. But he no longer thinks that being slow at decoding words means he’s dumb.

The best thing I can say about AI schools like Alpha is that they ask a question most schools avoid: What exactly are we doing with the time a child spends in front of us? Sometimes the answer is artificial. Sometimes it’s human. Most of the time, it’s the balance that matters. I’m still figuring out which parts of that balance are worth keeping.
