Why I Regret Buying So Many AP Chemistry Resources (and What to Do Instead)
The pile of AP Chemistry books sat on the kitchen table like an accusation. My daughter, a junior, looked at the stack I’d assembled over the summer: two different review guides, a set of flashcards, a practice test booklet, and a subscription to an online problem bank. She picked up the top book, flipped through it, then put it down. “I don’t even know where to start,” she said. “And these use different formulas than the stuff my teacher gave us.”
I didn’t know what to say. I’d spent hours reading reviews, comparing editions, and following forum threads. Each purchase had felt like a step toward supporting her. But in that moment, I realized I’d given her a homework assignment, not a resource.
It started in August. She’d enrolled in AP Chemistry because she loves science and wants to study biology in college. But she was nervous. I remember her telling me, “People say this class is impossible.” I wanted to help her feel prepared. So I did what I do best: I researched.
The first book I bought was the one everyone on Reddit seemed to recommend. It was thick, with dense chapters and a lot of practice problems. I left it on her desk with a note: “You’ve got this.” A week later, I saw it under a pile of papers. She’d done the first two chapters, but she kept going back to her class notes instead.
Then I saw a forum post about a different book that was supposedly more concise. It had diagrams and quick summaries. I ordered it. When it arrived, it looked great. But when I flipped through it, I noticed it used a different convention for redox reactions than the first book. That’s when things started getting messy.
One evening, I came into her room while she was studying equilibrium. She was frustrated. “This book uses Kp, and that one uses Kc, and my teacher writes it differently on the board,” she said. “I’m not sure which one is for the exam.” I didn’t have an answer. I felt like I’d made things worse.
Then came the flashcards. Those were my mistake. I bought them because a friend swore they’d helped her daughter memorize polyatomic ions. But my daughter never used them. She found the cards too simplistic—just names and formulas without context. She needed to understand why certain ions behaved a certain way, not just what they were called. The cards ended up in the same drawer as the old calculators.
The online question bank seemed like a good idea at the time: thousands of multiple-choice questions, immediate feedback, and a progress tracker. But after a week, my daughter said it felt like a video game. She was clicking through questions to keep a streak alive, not thinking about the chemistry. When she got one wrong, she’d read the explanation briefly and move on. It was practice, but not the kind that sticks.
So there we were, three weeks into the school year, with a table full of high-priced advice and a girl who felt less confident than she did before September.
At back-to-school night, I talked to her teacher after the presentation. I told him about the stack at home. He smiled and said, “Honestly, the best resource is the College Board’s own website. The free-response questions from past years are gold. I use them in class. If you want to buy one book, make sure it’s aligned with the current course description. But you don’t need a library.”
He was right. The College Board has a course and exam description that lists every topic and learning objective. The exam is designed to test your ability to apply concepts, not just memorize facts. Many commercial prep books, especially the flashy ones, overemphasize content knowledge and underemphasize the reasoning skills that the exam actually assesses. Some even contain material that’s no longer on the test. I’d never checked.
So we started over. I returned the books that were still returnable. The flashcards and online subscription were written off. We kept one review book—the one that matched the teacher’s curriculum. And we printed out six old free-response sets from the College Board website. That was it.
The shift was immediate. One evening, I sat with her while she worked through a past free-response question about equilibrium. She read the prompt, then spent a few minutes writing out an ICE table. At one point she stopped, looked at the scoring guidelines, and said, “Okay, I see—I forgot to include the units. I wouldn’t have realized that from a multiple-choice practice question.”
That moment taught me something. The old free-response questions weren’t just content review. They were a way of learning how the exam thinks. They showed her what a complete answer looked like, and why the points were assigned. A prep book can do that to some extent, but official materials do it more accurately.
Now it’s February, and my daughter is halfway through the year. She still struggles sometimes, especially with electrochemistry and thermodynamics. But she’s not overwhelmed anymore. She has one book, a folder of old exams, and a teacher she can ask. That’s enough.
Here’s what I’d tell any parent or student starting AP Chemistry, based on my own three-week spending spree:
First, ask the teacher before buying anything. Teachers know their curriculum, their pacing, and their own tests. They can tell you exactly what materials they use and what they recommend. If you already have a book, bring it to them and ask if it aligns.
Second, start with free official resources. The College Board publishes the full course description, sample questions, and scoring guidelines. The past free-response questions are especially useful. These are the most realistic practice you can get, and they cost nothing.
Third, buy one resource, not five. Give yourself a week to try it. If the student is constantly flipping to other sources to understand a topic, it’s not the right fit. A good resource should feel like it’s enough on its own.
And fourth, be wary of anything that promises a guaranteed score. No book can do that. A book that claims “the easiest way to a 5” is usually the easiest way to waste $30.
I still get ads for new AP Chemistry resources on my phone. Sometimes I pause before scrolling past. But I’ve learned that buying more doesn’t prepare you. Practicing, making mistakes, and understanding the explanations—that’s what prepares you. The resources just need to help you do that, not give you a hundred different ways to avoid it.
We’ll see how she does in May. I’m not as anxious about it as I was in August. And honestly, that’s a bigger win than any prep book could offer.
