When My Son Started Asking “Why” Instead of Memorizing the Answer
The first time it happened was during a worksheet about the water cycle. My son, then eight, was filling in the blanks: evaporation, condensation, precipitation. He knew the words cold, had written them in the neatest handwriting he could manage. Then he looked up and said, “But why does it rain? Like, actually? And who decided we needed to know this?”
I didn’t have a good answer. Not about the science—I could explain water vapor and saturation. But the “why do we need to know this” part? That came from a place I hadn’t expected. For weeks, he had been bringing home packets with terms to define and diagrams to label. He got good grades on them. But every evening, I watched him mechanically copying definitions from the textbook into his workbook. It was efficient. It was quiet. And it was exactly what the teacher asked for.
That moment in the kitchen, with the worksheet crumpled under his juice box, was the beginning of my own hypothesis. Not a scientific one, but a parenting one: the way we teach kids facts—deposit them, test them, move on—might be filling their heads without actually teaching them how to think. It’s an old idea, grounded in a critique that Brazilian educator Paulo Freire called the “banking concept of education.” Students are treated like empty accounts. Teachers make deposits. The goal is to get a correct balance at the end of the term. But nothing about that transaction asks the child to wonder, to challenge, or to connect what they’re learning to the life they actually live.
I didn’t know any of that terminology back then. I just knew my son was bored. Not lazy, not distracted, but bored in a way that made him ask questions he could sense nobody wanted. His teacher was a kind woman who genuinely cared. She told me during conferences that he was a “good student” who “followed directions well.” But the more time passed, the more I noticed he wasn’t following directions with himself. He was following them to get the work done so he could go outside.
So I started experimenting at home. No big curriculum changes, just small shifts in how we handled homework. When he asked why it rained, I didn’t give him the three-sentence textbook answer. Instead, I pulled up a video of a storm forming over the ocean, and we watched it together. Then I asked him, “What do you think happens if the air is really dirty? What would that do to the water?” For twenty minutes, he theorized. Some of it was wrong. Some of it was surprisingly close. But the important thing was that he wasn’t trying to guess what I wanted to hear. He was actually thinking.
That’s the core of the critique. Freire argued that the banking model keeps students passive. They receive, memorize, and repeat. Over time, they learn that knowledge is something handed down by authority figures, and their own curiosity becomes secondary. The opposite—what Freire called “problem-posing education”—involves dialogue. The teacher doesn’t deposit knowledge; they present problems and work alongside the student to investigate. It’s messier, slower, and far less predictable.
I tried this approach with my son’s weekly spelling words. Instead of having him copy each word five times, I asked him to choose three words he found interesting and write a silly sentence for each. No right or wrong theme. He picked “dangerous,” “energy,” and “return.” His sentence for energy was, “If my sister drank my milkshake, she would have more energy to annoy me.” He laughed, I laughed, and he spelled them all correctly on Friday. Not because he memorized them, but because he’d attached them to something real.
Of course, this isn’t a perfect experiment. The school system still runs on worksheets and standardized tests. My son still has to sit through lessons that feel like data entry. And I can’t single-handedly redesign his classroom. But I’ve noticed that when he comes home now, he sometimes tells me what he’s wondering about, not just what he covered. Last week, he asked why the people in his history book were mostly wearing hats. That led to a discussion about clothing, class, and photography in the 1800s. None of it was on the test. All of it was learning.
The practical takeaway for me has been simple: when kids ask “why,” don’t rush to answer. Ask them what they think first. Let them fumble. Let them be wrong. And when they’re doing repetitive homework, offer them a choice about how to complete it—even a small one like which three words to use in sentences. These aren’t grand gestures. They’re small cracks in the bank vault door.
There are days still when my son says, “Just tell me the answer, Mom. It’s faster.” And I get that. The banking model is efficient, and efficiency is tempting. But I’ve started to believe that the value of learning isn’t in the speed or the correct fill-in-the-blank. It’s in those awkward pauses where a kid’s face scrunches up because they’re trying to make sense of something. That’s where the real engagement lives. It’s just not always easy to get to, especially when the system around us keeps asking for receipts.
So we keep doing our small experiments. Some work, some flop. Tonight, he has a worksheet on the solar system. I’m thinking about after he finishes it, maybe we’ll go outside with a flashlight and a grapefruit to see how shadows work. Or maybe he’ll just want to watch cartoons. That’s okay too. The point isn’t that every moment has to be a Socratic seminar. It’s that I’m paying attention to what happens when he’s given a chance to question what he’s learned. So far, he’s taught me more than any textbook could about how learning actually sticks—and how often it doesn’t, simply because nobody asked him to care.
