What Should I Tell My Kid to Learn in the Age of AI? Practical Parenting Tips
Last Tuesday night, I sat across from my 13-year-old Javi at our kitchen table, an iced coffee ring bleeding into the placemat and a half-eaten chocolate chip cookie going stale next to his laptop. He leaned back, crossed his arms (the sleeve of his paint-stained hoodie riding up) and said, “Mom, why do I even need to work out this buoyancy problem? AI can write the whole report in 10 seconds. Why bother?”
I froze. I’d spent an hour the night before scrolling parent groups, where everyone was panicking about the same thing. One mom said all kids need to learn prompt engineering now, another said liberal arts are dead, another said we might as well just let AI raise them because nothing matters anymore. I was about to spit out some generic line about learning being for your brain, when I remembered the rocket fair two days before.
Javi had spent a week prepping his bottle rocket for the school competition, cutting fins out of an old 2-liter soda bottle and gluing them on with the white school glue we keep in the junk drawer. He pumped it full of air in the backyard, stepped back, and the whole thing flipped and crashed 10 feet away, fins hanging off like broken wings. He pulled out his phone immediately, asked AI how to fix a bottle rocket. AI told him to buy stronger epoxy glue and let it dry 24 hours. We didn’t have epoxy, and the fair was the next morning. Javi complained for 10 minutes, kicking at the grass, then his friend Leo showed up with his skateboard and they started messing around.
They bent the fins a little lower toward the nose cone, wrapped the joints with duct tape, and cut tiny notches in the edge of each fin to balance the weight. They tested it again, and it shot right over our fence into Mrs. Henderson’s rose bushes. They ran after it yelling, and when they came back Javi was grinning, covered in clippings and dirt. AI never would have thought to use duct tape and notch the fins with a pocket knife, because AI didn’t know we didn’t have epoxy, or that we needed a fix in an hour. That’s when it hit me: all the big expert takes I was reading were missing the small, everyday stuff that actually matters.
I don’t bother with big lessons about AI anymore. Instead, I’ve been working three small, low-effort things into our daily routine that don’t require extra classes or expensive tutoring.
The first is practicing how to ask specific questions. AI only gives you what you ask for, and most of us (kids and adults alike) default to vague questions that get useless answers. When Javi asked AI how to fix his rocket, he got generic glue advice because he asked a generic question. If he’d asked how to fix falling fins with only duct tape and school glue, he would have gotten something useful. To practice this, whenever Javi pulls up AI to answer a question, I just stop him for 30 seconds and ask him to narrow it down first. When he asked last week “what’s the best video game for my birthday?” I didn’t let AI spit out a top 10 list. I said, “What do you actually want? Do you want something you can play with Leo, or something you can play alone after school? Do you want something that takes 10 minutes at a time, or something you can sink hours into?” It’s a tiny habit, but it teaches him to figure out what he actually needs, not just settle for what a screen gives him.
The second is stepping back and letting him solve messy, physical problems on his own. AI knows all the theory in the world, but it can’t feel that the glue is too slippery, or that the fin doesn’t sit right on the curve of a soda bottle, or that a bike chain is caught on a bent gear tooth that doesn’t show up in a diagram. Now, if his bike chain falls off, I don’t fix it for him right away. I hand him a greasy paper towel and say, “Try first, holler if you need me.” If his Lego set is missing a piece, I don’t run to the store to order a replacement. I ask him what we have around the house that could work instead. It’s not about raising a little engineer. It’s about getting him used to adjusting to what’s actually in front of him, not just following a step-by-step list someone else wrote.
The third is getting in the habit of checking AI’s answers against his own experience. AI makes up facts all the time, and it’s easy to just take what it says as true. A few months ago, Javi used AI to write a paragraph about the old textile mill down the road for a local history project. AI said the mill opened in 1962 and closed in 2001, but Javi’s grandpa worked there, and he’d already told Javi it opened in 1957. I just asked him one question that day: “Does this match what you already know to be true?” Now that’s our rule: any time he uses AI for school, he has to ask himself that question before he turns it in. It doesn’t require a full fact-check every time, just a quick pause to remind him his own experience matters more than what a screen says.
Back to that Tuesday night homework. I told Javi, “AI can write the report about buoyancy. But it can’t build the rocket that flew over Mrs. Henderson’s roses. That part’s still you.” He rolled his eyes, then sat back down and worked out the problem himself.
I still worry sometimes. I don’t know what jobs will be around when Javi graduates college, I don’t know if I’m missing some big critical skill he needs. Some nights, when we’re both tired, I let him use AI to write the boring parts of his homework. We don’t do everything right. But so far, these small daily habits feel better than panicking about all the stuff we can’t predict. We’re just taking it one question, one broken rocket, one homework assignment at a time.
