The gap isn’t just between schools in rich districts and poor districts, though that’s part of it. But even within the same building, the same hallway, you see it. I get the skepticism, honestly. Let your kid use it at home for the work that helps them: have them turn their messy lecture notes into an AI-generated outline, then write all their answers and study from the outline themselves. That way they’re still doing the learning, they just get the organizational help that a lot of kids need. If you’re a teacher who’s curious but doesn’t have time to redo your whole curriculum, start with one small activity a month. Try using AI to generate 3 different levels of practice problems for your math class, so kids who are behind get easier problems and kids who are ahead get harder ones, without you spending 3 hours making them yourself. Spend one 45-minute class period having kids fact-check an AI-generated essay on your current unit, so they learn how to spot errors right away. It doesn’t have to be a huge overhaul.

Last week, Javi finished his unit on the French Revolution. He used AI to organize his notes at the kitchen table after dinner, then rewrote all the review questions in his own messy handwriting before he turned it in. He got a B+ because Mr. Torres didn’t mark it wrong this time, since he couldn’t tell Javi used AI. I’m going to the school board meeting next month to ask for funded, consistent AI training for all teachers, not just the ones who can afford to spend their own time learning. I don’t know if the board will approve it. Right now, every month that goes by just gives the kids with teachers who use AI a bigger head start, and leaves the rest further behind. That’s the gap, and it’s not going anywhere unless we choose to close it.
