Hello everyone, I am Kathy. My main job is copyright editing, and my side job is self media writing.
I have a son and a daughter, and I am willing to accompany you on the path of your child’s growth and become a better mother together.
Original painting: Xin Xin’s son started learning Go from the first grade of elementary school until he graduated from sixth grade.
In six years, his logical and spatial thinking abilities have been greatly improved, which has also been beneficial for his mathematical learning.
Moreover, there is one thing that I highly value, which is that he has learned the ability to review.
01 Review ability, derived from Go terminology, refers to the ability to re-examine the strengths and weaknesses of each step after a game, in order to extract experience and learn from lessons.
From my own experience, conducting a review is far more effective than simply studying hard. So, how should children do a retrospective.
Why is a child’s ability to review more important than simple effort. Firstly, we must recognize that reviewing is not just a learning strategy, but also an ability to think and grow.
In the process of children’s learning, this means that they need to review their own learning process, reflect on which methods are effective and which ones need improvement, so that they can be more adept when encountering similar problems in the future.
We can do retrospective work ourselves, from a large meeting to a small business communication phone call.
Reviewing is to identify areas where we did well, to continue doing so in the future, and more importantly, to identify areas where we didn’t do well, analyze why we didn’t do well, how we can improve, and strive to do better next time.
Only in this way can we reap rewards in every review and become increasingly outstanding. For children, the reason why the ability to review is important is because it is directly related to their learning efficiency and problem-solving skills.
Through reflection, children can learn from their own experiences, avoid repeating mistakes, and extract successful strategies.
This ability not only affects children’s learning, but also their ability to handle problems. Reviewing can help children learn how to analyze, summarize, and correct problems when facing them independently.
In addition, the ability to review can promote the clarity of children’s self-awareness, allowing them to understand their strengths and weaknesses, and thus focus on their areas of expertise.
This ability of self-awareness is crucial for a child’s personal growth, as it can help them learn from failures, summarize experiences in successes, and ultimately move towards higher levels through continuous adjustment.
So, how can we guide children to do a review. Firstly, it is important for children to understand that conducting thorough reviews is the key to improving learning efficiency.
We can help children constantly review from two perspectives: cultivating good study habits and mastering correct and efficient learning methods.
Regularly review learning habits: Cultivate the habit of children scheduling at least one fixed time per week to review what they have learned this week.
This helps them systematically review and consolidate their knowledge. Daily penetration: Encourage children to take a few minutes before bedtime every day to review the knowledge points they learned that day.
This daily review can help deepen memory. Parent companionship: In the early stages of the review process, parents can work with their children to guide them in identifying problems and forming habits.
Comparison of learning methods: Review the learning goals set with the child and compare them with the actual results, so that the child can clearly understand their achievements and shortcomings.
Self analysis: Allow children to self analyze, review their performance and growth over a period of time, so that they can have a deeper understanding of their shortcomings and make improvements.
Tools: Use error books, mind maps, and other tools to help organize and summarize learning content. Set goals: Before each review, clarify the problems or areas for improvement that you want to solve.
Feedback adjustment: After the review, develop a specific action plan and check the execution status during the next review, and make adjustments based on the results.
SQ3R Reading Method: This is an efficient reading and learning system. It was first proposed by American educational philosopher Francis P.
Robinson in his 1946 book “Effective Study”. It is an effective method that can help students learn, understand, and remember more quickly.
Many universities, including UCL, recommend using this method for daily learning or exam preparation.
This system includes five steps: browsing, questioning, reading, retelling, and reviewing, helping children move from details to the whole, and then returning to details from the whole, establishing an efficient and systematic learning system.
Cornell note taking method: Divide notes into a clue column, a note column, and a summary column to efficiently organize knowledge.
Previously, I enrolled my son in the Youdao Bo Wen class, and every time I enrolled, I would send us various notebooks.
One of them was the Cornell notebook, and it was from then on that I guided my son to take good notes.
Through the above methods, children can better review and summarize their learning process, identify areas where they did well and areas where they did not, provide timely feedback and adjustments, and thus learn more efficiently.
Remember, not all efforts will be rewarded, but the effort to review will definitely make a child’s growth path smoother.
