What you want to look for is a program that explains mistakes, not just marks them. The word “hint” should be followed by a different approach, not the same one repeated.

Another thing that helped: I started asking Max to finish this sentence after homework: “The tricky part was…” He used to say “everything.” But now, with a little pause, he’ll say, “The regrouping in subtraction” or “The sentence about the main idea.” That’s not AI magic. It’s just changing the question from “Did you understand?” to “What didn’t you understand?”

As for Alpha, I haven’t enrolled him. The tuition is steep, and I’m not sure a fully screen-based morning is right for a kid who also needs to bounce on the couch. But the visit changed how I think about schools. The role of the teacher isn’t to stand at the board anymore. It might be to stand next to desk, asking a better question than any algorithm could.

I left the building feeling less anxious about Max’s math than I had in months. Not because I have answers, but because I saw a version of learning that doesn’t depend on everyone moving in lockstep. Whether that’s the future or just a nice experiment for certain kids, I don’t know. For now, I’m watching him move a little faster through the computer problems, and wondering if that’s enough.
