The kitchen table was buried under a biology textbook, a spiral notebook, and a cup of cold tea. My son, Jake, stared at the page with the glassy look I’ve come to recognize—the look that says he’s done, but it’s only 4 p.m. on a Sunday.

“I read every section,” he said, flipping to another chapter. “I literally read this chapter three times. And I still can’t remember anything. I’m going to fail the test.”

I leaned over to see what he had been doing. The textbook was a riot of color. Yellow highlighter covered entire paragraphs. Some sentences had blue and green overlays. There were small stars in the margins and the word “IMPORTANT!” written in red next to a diagram. On the notebook, a page of notes copied almost word-for-word from the text.

He wasn’t lazy. He was putting in the time. But something was clearly broken.

When I suggested we take a break and try a different method, he got defensive. “I don’t need a break,” he said. “I need to get this in my head.” He opened the book again and started reading the same highlighted passage. This time, his finger traced the words. It was like watching someone try to make a sandwich by reading the recipe over and over without ever touching the ingredients.

I’m not a teacher, but I’ve been around enough homework to notice a pattern. Kids—mine especially—fall back on what feels like studying. Reading, highlighting, copying notes. It gives them the illusion of effort. You can spend two hours and feel like you’ve worked hard, but the brain hasn’t done much at all.

It wasn’t until I heard my wife talking about a professional development workshop at her school that I found a way to break the loop. The speaker had told them something simple: “When your child says they read the text, ask them to close the book and tell you what it said. If they can’t, they haven’t studied yet.”

So I tried something that afternoon, despite Jake’s eye roll.

“Okay, close the book,” I said.

“Why?”

“Just try it. Close it. Tell me what that section was about—the one about photosynthesis?”

He opened his mouth, then closed it. “It’s like… plants make food? With light.”

“Okay, that’s a start. What are the inputs and outputs?”

He frowned. “Carbon dioxide and water go in, and… oxygen? And glucose?” He wasn’t sure about glucose until he peeked at the book. Then he insisted he had known it.

But that tiny exercise made something obvious. He had been reading the words without connecting them. He was familiar with the vocabulary, but he couldn’t reorganize it in his own mind. When I asked him to explain it as if to a younger cousin, he started to get frustrated. “I don’t talk like that,” he mumbled.

We tried a different angle. I found a blank piece of paper and drew a simple, messy circle with an arrow. “Pretend this is your brain. You’ve been putting ingredients in, but they’re all loose. You need to link them together.”

This is where it got interesting. Instead of highlighting another line, I asked him to make a “cheat sheet” from memory: one page, no book, with the main ideas, a few key terms, and maybe a quick diagram. It felt uncomfortable for him because it didn’t look like studying. It looked like testing himself, which he hated because he got things wrong.

But after the first attempt, he noticed something. He could remember the steps of photosynthesis if he hummed a little song his teacher had taught them in class. That led us to a discussion about how the electron transport chain was like a conveyor belt, and ATP production was like charging a battery. We spent more time talking than reading.

The next day, he came home from school and reported that the teacher had gone over the material again. This time, Jake said, “I actually knew what she was talking about.” He wasn’t necessarily confident, but he was less lost.

Over the next few weeks, we developed a loose routine. Instead of rereading chapters, he would first try to write down everything he knew about the topic in a quick brainstorm. Then he would read the section more actively, noticing what he missed. Then he’d close the book and explain it aloud to himself or to his dog. On evenings before tests, he made an index card for terms—but the rule was he had to generate the definition from memory first, then flip to check.

Not every course worked the same way. In history, he needed to make timelines. In math, he had to work practice problems without looking at the example first. The core idea was the same: pull information out, don’t just push it in. But there was no single right method. We discovered this when his younger sister started copying his “close the book” habit and then got frustrated because it didn’t help her memorize French vocabulary. She needed flashcards and repetition.

As a parent, it’s easy to think a kid either “gets it” or doesn’t. But watching Jake stumble through active recall made me realize that studying is a set of skills we should have taught him earlier. No one had ever said to him, “Reading is not the same as learning.” His teachers likely did, but in a classroom full of 30 kids, that message can get lost.

The changes didn’t come all at once. His biology test was a 78%, which was a big improvement from the 62% on the previous one. He still claimed he hated the subject, but he stopped saying he couldn’t do it. About a month later, I heard him muttering under his breath in his room, explaining to his rubber duck how the tachycardia “can cause cardiac arrest.” I think he was making a video for himself, but I didn’t ask.

There are still plenty of nights when he sits down with his chem workbook and stares blankly for a few minutes. I’ve been tempted to jump in and ask questions, but I’ve learned to wait. Sometimes he’ll start talking to himself, trying to reason out the next step. Other times he’ll put his head down and say, “I’m stuck. I don’t know what to do.”

I don’t have a magic answer for that. We try to break the task down into smaller chunks. If a problem looks impossible, I ask him to write down one thing he knows, even if it’s just the name of the formula. But there’s no guaranteed method.

The biggest change has been in what he thinks studying means. He no longer says, “I read the chapter four times.” Instead, he’ll say, “I need to make some practice questions.” Or, “I haven’t done a concept map yet.” It’s a small shift in vocabulary, but it shows he understands that effort alone isn’t enough. The effort has to be aimed at the right activity.

I don’t know if my son will ever love biology or calculus or the course he has to take to graduate. But I think he’s started to learn something more important: how to learn, full stop. And as his father, that’s the lesson I was really hoping he’d pick up.
