She was a sophomore in high school, and she had never struggled like this before. Chemistry was her first real wall. The class had a reputation, with a teacher who gave tough quizzes and didn’t hand out extra credit. Maya was used to pulling off B’s with minimal effort, but now she was staring down a C-minus and a future of wondering whether she was just “not a science person.”

I sat down across from her, not because I had a plan, but because I didn’t know what else to do. My first instinct was the standard parent pep talk: “You just need to study harder. You can do this.” But the words died in my throat. She had been studying harder. The problem wasn’t effort. It was something else.

I asked her to show me how she studied. She opened her notebook, where she had copied definitions in neat columns, and pointed to a page of homework problems. “I do the problems, and then I check the answers in the back. If I get them right, I move on.”

That sounded reasonable. But when I asked her to explain the concept of molarity to me—without looking at anything—she froze. She could say the formula, but she couldn’t tell me what it meant or why it mattered. She was mistaking recognizing information for understanding it.

That’s when I remembered a conversation I’d had with her math teacher the previous year. The teacher said that most students don’t fail because they’re lazy. They fail because they study the wrong way. They reread their notes until the material feels familiar, and then they’re shocked when a test asks them to use it in a new way.

So that night, we tried something different. Instead of rereading the chapter, I told Maya to close her textbook and explain the main idea to me as if I were a classmate who had missed the lesson. She started haltingly, flipping through her notes for support. I made her put the notes away. She got frustrated. She said, “I can’t do this. I don’t know it.”

And I said, “Good. Now we know what you don’t know.”

That was our starting point.

We spent the next twenty minutes with a blank piece of paper. She would write down every formula or concept she could remember from the chapter, without checking any source. Then she’d look at her list and put a star next to the ones she was unsure about. For each starred item, she created a simple question and a short answer—like a flashcard, but in her own words. She didn’t need to write essays. Just the essentials.

The next day, she came home with a slightly better quiz score, but more importantly, she had a new habit. Instead of closing her eyes to recall, she started covering her notes and asking herself questions out loud. I heard her in her room saying “so the mole is just a counting unit, like a dozen” and then rolling her eyes at her own analogy. But she was talking to herself, which meant she was processing. That was a win.

Still, she wasn’t out of the woods. The real breakthrough came a week later, when she got a D on a test and I made the mistake of asking, “What went wrong?” She shrugged. “I studied, but the teacher asked about stuff that wasn’t even in my notes.”

I asked if she had the test back. She pulled it out of her backpack, crumpled at the bottom. We looked at it together. Three of the eight questions she got wrong were about lab procedures we had never discussed at home. Another two were word problems that had multiple steps. But the pattern was obvious: she wasn’t reading the questions carefully. She was rushing, anxious, jumping to the first formula that came to mind.

So we started something new. Before she studied for the next test, I told her to first look at the test format from previous quizzes—what types of questions her teacher liked. True or false? Calculations? Explanations? She realized the teacher never asked for definitions. She asked for examples and comparisons. That meant Maya had to practice applying concepts, not just memorizing them.

We also made a small environmental change. She had been studying in her room, face down on her bed, with her phone silently glowing next to her. We moved her work to the dining table, where she couldn’t lie down, and her phone stayed in another room. She complained for a day, then admitted she got done in forty minutes what used to take two hours.

The most surprising shift happened when she started teaching me. Every Sunday night, Maya gave me a five-minute mini-lesson on whatever her class had covered that week. She had to decide what was important, draw a quick diagram, and answer my completely uneducated questions. At first, she found it annoying. But then she realized that my questions forced her to think about the “why” rather than just the “what.” When she could explain why a covalent bond wasn’t as strong as an ionic one, in plain English, she knew she was ready.

By the end of the semester, her grade had crept up to a solid B-plus. Not an A, but a respectable improvement. More importantly, she stopped saying “I can’t do chemistry” and started saying “chemistry is a lot of work, but I’ve got a system.”

That system wasn’t anything revolutionary. It was a combination of retrieval practice, error analysis, and a weekly habit of self-testing. But the biggest change wasn’t in the techniques themselves. It was in how Maya thought about the word “study.” She no longer saw it as reading until something feels familiar. She saw it as a process of repeatedly finding out what she didn’t know, then fixing it.

There’s still a small part of me that wishes she could just love chemistry. But she doesn’t, and that’s okay. What she learned this year wasn’t the periodic table. It was that excelling doesn’t come from sitting still and trying harder. It comes from getting a little more honest about where you’re stuck.

I don’t know if she’ll bring this system to every class next year. She might fall back into old habits when a teacher is easier or a subject feels more natural. That’s fine. For now, the dining table is a little messier, she has a notebook full of half-written explanations, and the highlighter has faded into the background. She still gets frustrated sometimes. But she also knows that frustration isn’t a reason to stop. It’s just a signal to put the book down and try to teach it to me.
