Why the Growing AI Gap in Classrooms Is Leaving Some Students Behind
Last month, during parent-teacher conference night, I was leaning against the teacher’s lounge counter sipping watery coffee from a paper cup when Ms. Henderson, the 7th grade social studies teacher down the hall, wandered in to restock her granola bar stash. She leaned against the counter next to me, rubbing her lower back, and said, “I don’t get it. All your former kids come into my class able to pull together a solid argument faster than my kids who’ve been with me all year. What are you doing that I’m not?” I laughed and told her I wasn’t doing anything magic – I just started letting kids use AI as a learning tool this year, and we spend 10 minutes a week practicing how to use it right. She rolled her eyes, crossed her arms, and said she wasn’t going to let kids cheat their way through middle school. It’s just another education fad, she said, and it’ll be gone by next year anyway.
I get that pushback. I was there two years ago, when our district first offered free AI training for teachers. I thought it was just another thing to add to my already overflowing plate, another trend that would fizzle out once people realized kids would just use it to copy homework. But my district paid us a $150 stipend to go to the two-day training, so I signed up for the extra cash, and left surprised by how simple it was to weave into what I was already teaching.
This fall, all 8th grade language arts classes did a midterm research project on undercovered civil rights activists. Half the 8th grade teachers opted to ban AI entirely, sticking to the old process of using the school library’s print collection and pre-approved websites. I and three other teachers who did the training let kids use AI as a brainstorming and organizational tool, with clear rules: AI can’t write your essay, it can only help you come up with angles, organize your notes, and clean up grammar mistakes. When we turned in all the grades to the department head, we saw a clear gap: the average score on the analysis portion of the project (the part that matters most, where kids connect their activist’s work to current events) was 17 points higher in the classes that used AI as a tool.
One of my students, Javi, has dyslexia and has struggled with writing since elementary school. He could talk through a great argument out loud, but by the time he spelled every word and fixed every grammar mistake, he’d lost his train of thought and half his ideas were cut. This year, he started using AI to transcribe his spoken notes and fix basic grammar errors, so he can spend his time working on the argument instead of the mechanics. Last month, he turned in a personal narrative that earned a B+ – the first B he’s ever gotten in a language arts class. If I’d banned AI entirely, he’d still be stuck staring at a blank document for 40 minutes every class.
What’s worrying me isn’t that some teachers don’t want to use AI. It’s that the gap between kids who get to learn this skill and kids who don’t is getting wider every month. Wealthier districts around us already require all teachers to do AI training, and they pay for filtered, kid-safe AI tools for every student. Teachers get paid prep time to adjust their lessons, so it doesn’t feel like just another thing added to their plate. In lower-income schools like ours, most teachers haven’t had any formal training, and the district can’t afford to pay stipends or buy tools. Even when free tools are available, overworked teachers don’t have time to figure them out on their own, and many are just resistant like Ms. Henderson was. So the kids who have parents that know about AI, that can pay for tools at home, that teach their kids how to use it, they’re getting ahead. The kids that don’t have that, they’re falling further behind.
A lot of teachers think they have to redo their entire curriculum to add AI, but that’s not true. I started with one 45-minute activity my first year: I had AI write a wrong, incomplete paragraph about the essay topic we were working on, and had students fact-check it and rewrite it to be correct. That’s it. It took one period, and it taught kids that AI makes mistakes, and you always have to check its work. Now I add one 10-minute activity a week: one week we practice turning a boring prompt into three more interesting prompts with AI, the next we practice outlining a paper. It doesn’t take much time, and it adds up. For parents, if your kid’s school doesn’t teach this, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to help. Just once a month, when your kid has a big project, sit down with them for 15 minutes. Use a free, kid-safe tool, ask AI to help brainstorm three project angles, then have your kid check one fact from each brainstorm against their textbook or a trusted .gov website. That’s all you need to do to help them start building the skill they’ll need for college and work.
Last week, Ms. Henderson stopped by my classroom after school. She had a printout of her next unit on civil rights in her hand, and she asked for that one-page cheat sheet I made for teachers just getting started. She said she’d graded her last set of quizzes, and noticed that all the kids who got A’s already used AI at home to help them study – their parents showed them how. The kids who got C’s and D’s had never used it at all, and didn’t know the first thing about it. She said she didn’t want to be the one that left them behind.
I gave her the cheat sheet, and she said she’s going to try that fact-checking activity next week. We still don’t know exactly how all this will shake out. There are still questions about cheating, about privacy, about how much is too much. But the gap isn’t going away if we just ignore it. Right now, every week we wait to teach kids how to use this tool, it gets a little wider.
