Why Memorizing the Answer Isn’t Learning: What Parents Should Know About the Banking Model of Education
Last Thursday, my daughter sat at the kitchen table with a study guide in front of her. She had a science quiz the next day on photosynthesis. I heard her whispering the definition over and over: “Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water.”
She could say it perfectly. So I asked her, “What does that actually mean? What’s the plant doing?”
She looked at me blankly. “I don’t know. I just need to memorize it for the quiz.”
I tried a different question. “You know the plant on your windowsill? What do you think it’s doing right now?”
She shrugged. “Making food? I guess.”
“How?”
“I don’t know,” she said, turning back to her paper.
It wasn’t that she was being difficult. She had done exactly what school asked her to do: she had learned the words. But the words didn’t connect to the actual plant sitting two feet away from her. And I wondered if that was really her problem, or the way the material had been handed to her.
There’s a term for this. The Brazilian educator Paulo Freire called it the “banking concept of education.” The image is simple. In this model, the teacher is the depositor, and the students are the empty accounts. The teacher makes deposits of information, dates, formulas, definitions, and the students receive them, store them, and repeat them back when asked. The more neatly they reproduce the deposits, the better they’re considered to be learning.
Freire wrote about this decades ago, but it still describes a lot of what happens in classrooms today. My daughter was being asked to receive a fact about photosynthesis, hold it in her memory overnight, and hand it back on a piece of paper the next morning. Nothing about that process required her to actually think about a plant. It just required her to trust that the definition was important and to remember it for one day.
I understand why schools do this. Teachers are under pressure to cover material, prepare for standardized tests, and manage twenty-five kids at once. It’s a lot easier to ask a class to memorize a definition than it is to have them observe a plant for three weeks and figure out what happens when one is kept in the dark. The bank model is efficient. It’s also, for many kids, the thing that slowly trains them to stop caring about learning.
My hypothesis is this: when children get used to receiving knowledge instead of discovering it, they start to believe that learning is about performing, not understanding. They get good at recognizing what will be on the test. They learn to ask “Will this be graded?” before they ask “Why is this happening?” Somewhere along the way, the natural curiosity they had as toddlers gets replaced by an instinct to collect points.
I saw this with my own daughter when she was younger. Before she started school, she would spend forever watching ants carry crumbs across the sidewalk. She’d ask questions I couldn’t answer: “Where are they going?” “How do they know where to go?” “Why are they carrying that?” She wasn’t trying to get a grade. She just wanted to make sense of what she saw.
School didn’t do that to her on purpose. But somewhere between the worksheets and the study guides, she stopped asking those kinds of questions. Now she asks “Is this on the test?” more often than “Why?”
I’m not saying memorization is useless. There are lots of things that need to become automatic, like multiplication tables or spelling. And I know that not every lesson can be a hands-on project. But when memorization becomes the entire point, when the answer is more important than the thinking behind it, something gets lost.
The other night, my son was studying for a history test. He had a list of dates: when the Civil War started, when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, when the war ended. He could recite them in order. But when I asked him what he thought it would have felt like to live during that time, he said, “I don’t know. We didn’t talk about that.”
He wasn’t complaining. He was just stating a fact. The class had covered dates and battles, not the everyday experience of people living through it. A week later, we happened to watch a movie set during the same period. He turned to me at one point and said, “Wait, did they not have cars yet?” That question felt more like real learning to me than any list of dates he had memorized. He was connecting new information to something he hadn’t thought about before. He was making his own bridge.
Freire’s critique was deeper than just “school is boring.” He believed that treating students as empty containers teaches them to accept the world as it is, without questioning it. If you spend twelve years receiving facts, you start to think that knowledge is something other people hand down to you, not something you build yourself. You become less likely to question a textbook, a news story, or even a politician. That’s a heavy idea, but it’s worth sitting with.
For parents, the question is what to do about it. We can’t change the whole school system. Most of us aren’t in a position to rewrite the curriculum. But we can do small things at home that help kids reconnect with the part of learning that feels alive.
When my daughter comes home with a definition, I try not to just quiz her on it. Instead, I ask her to explain it to me like I’m someone who has never heard of it. That usually forces her to make it her own. Sometimes we look for an example. If she’s studying fractions, we cook something and I ask her to figure out what happens if we halve the recipe. If she’s studying weather, we go outside and look at the clouds and I ask what she thinks they’re doing.
I’m not a teacher, and I don’t claim to have a perfect method. But I’ve learned that one simple question can go a long way: “What do you think?” It sounds obvious, but kids are so used to being told the right answer that they’re often surprised when an adult asks for their opinion. Even when they’re wrong, the act of trying to explain their thinking does more for their brain than memorizing another fact.
The other thing I’ve started doing is being honest about what I don’t know. When my daughter asks me a science question and I’m not sure, I say, “I don’t know, let’s figure it out.” That’s a different kind of modeling. It shows her that learning isn’t about already knowing everything. It’s about the process of finding out.
I still have to make sure she does her homework. The quiz is still coming. Tomorrow morning, she’ll probably recite the photosynthesis definition one more time, and she’ll get a good grade. I’m not going to stop her. But I’m also trying to plant a different kind of question in her mind, one that has nothing to do with the test. Because the definition of photosynthesis won’t help her notice the way the leaves are turning outside. But the curiosity behind it might.
