Last Tuesday, my daughter sat at the kitchen counter with her science study guide open to a highlighted section. “I know this,” she said. “Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants use sunlight to synthesize nutrients from carbon dioxide and water.” She recited it the same way she had heard it in class, with the same rhythm and the same confidence. I was impressed for a second.

Then I asked, “So if you put a plant in a dark closet, what happens to it?”

She looked at the question like I had changed the rules. “The definition is what’s on the test,” she said. Not defensive. Just confused.

That moment is a small example of something the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire called the banking concept of education. In this model, the teacher is the one who knows, and the student is the one who doesn’t. The teacher makes deposits of information, like putting money into a bank account, and the student is expected to receive, store, and repeat the information later. The goal is to match the original deposit exactly. The more accurately a child can repeat it, the more successful we call the learning.

There’s a reason this feels familiar to most parents. It’s how a lot of us were taught. But watching my daughter stumble over a simple question about a plant in a closet made me think about what that model actually trains kids to do.

My hypothesis is this: the banking concept doesn’t just fail to teach real understanding—it teaches children to stop asking why. When knowledge is treated as a thing to be transferred, kids learn that their own thoughts are not part of the process. They become passive. They wait for the next deposit. And after enough years of this, they begin to believe that learning is something that happens to them, not something they do.

I saw it again a few weeks later with my son’s math homework. He had a page full of long division problems, and he was working through them with the steps written on the top of the page. “Do I need to know why this works?” he asked. “My teacher said just use the steps.” He got the answers right, but when I asked him to explain what he was actually doing, he couldn’t. He had memorized a procedure, not a process. He had made a deposit.

That night, I tried something different. Instead of going over the steps again, I gave him a handful of coins and asked him to split them evenly. He did it easily. Then I asked him to write down what he had just done. He looked at his notes and said, “Oh. That’s the long division thing.” He didn’t need a new explanation. He needed to see that the knowledge was already inside him.

That’s the part the banking model misses. Real learning happens when a child connects new information to something they already know or wonder about. It’s messy. It involves wrong guesses and dead ends. It doesn’t fit neatly into a study guide. But it’s also what makes knowledge last.

I’m not saying there’s no place for memorization. Multiplication tables, spelling words, historical dates—those are useful tools. The problem is when memorization becomes the whole point. When the test asks for a definition, kids will memorize the definition. But if the test asked them to explain what would happen to a houseplant in a closet, or to prove why a division step works, they’d be lost. And that’s not their fault. It’s the system.

So what can a parent do about it? I’ve been experimenting with a few small changes, not as a way to fight the school system, but to balance it out at home.

The easiest one is to ask different kinds of questions. When my daughter came home with a vocabulary list, I used to say, “What does photosynthesis mean?” Now I try to ask, “Can you explain this to your little brother?” or “What would happen if the sun went away for a week?” Those questions force her to use the word, not just recall it. Sometimes she gets stuck. That’s fine. The stuck part is where the thinking actually happens.

I’ve also started paying more attention to how I help with homework. When my kids ask for help, my first instinct is to give them the answer. But that’s just another deposit. Instead, I try to say, “What do you already know about this?” or “Where do you think you should start?” It’s slower, and sometimes it’s frustrating for everyone. But I’ve noticed that when I don’t jump in, they often figure it out themselves. Not always. But more than I expected.

Another thing that’s helped is making space for curiosity at the dinner table. Instead of asking “What did you learn today?”—which usually gets a shrug—I’ve been asking “What’s something you wondered about today?” or “Tell me something that didn’t make sense.” Those questions send a message: not knowing is not the end of the world. It’s the beginning of learning.

I’m not trying to turn every meal into a deep discussion. Some nights we talk about sports or video games. But when I do ask, I’ve noticed the kids are more willing to say “I don’t get it” than they used to be. That alone feels like progress.

The hard part is that the banking model isn’t going away. Teachers are under pressure to cover a certain amount of material by a certain date. Tests have answer keys. Grading a hundred short essays takes longer than grading a hundred multiple-choice sheets. I get it. I’m not here to blame teachers. I’m just trying to give my kids a way to keep their own thinking alive in a system that doesn’t always reward it.

I’m also aware that my hypothesis could be wrong. Maybe some children memorize first and understand later. Maybe the repetition is actually building something I can’t see yet. There are plenty of people who thrived under traditional schooling and remember those facts perfectly. I don’t want to throw all of that out.

But I can’t shake that moment at the kitchen counter. My daughter knew photosynthesis. She really did. She just didn’t know that she knew it.

Last night, I was helping her study for a social studies test. She had memorized the date of a treaty, the names of the people involved, and all the reasons for the conflict. She was ready. On a whim, I asked her, “Do you think the treaty could have been written differently?”

She thought about it for a second. “I don’t know,” she said. “I’ll have to see what’s on the test.”

That answer made me a little sad. But she’s not wrong. The test is next week. The date will be on it. She’ll get the question right, and the deposit will be returned.

I’m not sure what the alternative looks like in a classroom with thirty kids and a tight schedule. I’m not even sure how to keep my own questions from sounding like practice for a different kind of test. Maybe the best I can do is keep asking the questions that don’t have a right answer, and hope that eventually one of them sticks.
