Why Is My 8-Month-Old Baby Suddenly Sleeping Poorly? Real Parenting Tips That Work

10:24 PM, I’m standing in my hallway outside the nursery, coffee in a chipped Mickey Mouse mug that’s been cold since 7:45, socks with a hole in the toe, and my 8-month-old Milo is wailing like someone stole his favorite teething ring. I just put him down 20 minutes ago, and this is the third time tonight. Two weeks ago, we had a system: 7 PM bath, read Brown Bear, warm bottle, down by 7:30, and he’d sleep straight through till 6 AM. I even joked at playgroup that I’d finally cracked baby sleep, like I’d some how unlocked a secret no one else had.

Then, right around his 8-month birthday, it fell apart. First he started waking up once a night, then twice, then some nights he’d scream for an hour straight before he’d settle. I checked every box the parenting books told me to: teeth? Gums felt firm, no fever, no extra drool that wasn’t normal. Too hungry? I added an extra half serving of sweet potato before bed, he ate every bite, still cried. Too hot? Too cold? I adjusted the thermostat twice, swapped his lightweight sleep sack for a fleece one and back again, nothing stuck. I tried letting him cry it out, which left me pacing the kitchen biting my knuckle to keep from crying too. I tried bringing him into bed with me, and he just pulled my hair and chewed on my shirt, wide awake at 2 AM.

My older sister came over for takeout pizza last Saturday, and Milo was passed out in my lap, having only napped 15 minutes all morning. When I stood up to grab extra napkins, he jolted awake and started whining, reaching for me before I’d even taken three steps. She leaned back against the couch and said, “You haven’t connected the daytime clinginess to the night stuff, have you?”

I hadn’t. I’d noticed he crawled after me every time I left the play mat, that he cried if I closed the bathroom door, but I just thought it was a weird new phase. She reminded me that 8 months is when object permanence really clicks. He knows I exist when I’m not in the room now, he just doesn’t know when or if I’m coming back. So when he drifts between sleep cycles at night, and opens his eyes and I’m gone? That’s not bad behavior, that’s terror. It all clicked right there, grease on my sweatpants and half a slice of pizza gone cold on the plate.

I didn’t want to do a whole big sleep training overhaul, I was too tired for that. I just tried a few small, specific changes that fit into our messy routine, and most of them didn’t cost anything. The first was 10-second check-ins. Instead of rushing in the second I hear a peep, or staying away for 10 minutes to let him “cry it out”, I wait two minutes to make sure he’s not hurt or sick, then I go in. I don’t turn on the overhead light, I just use the glow of the hallway night light. I say “Mama’s here, it’s sleepy time”, give his belly one quick rub, and turn right back around and leave. No picking him up, no playing, no extra talking. It took a few nights for him to get used to it, but it stopped him from getting all riled up from being picked up, and stopped me from having a panic attack listening to him scream alone.

The second was adding 10 minutes of separation play during the day. It’s just silly, low-stakes stuff: we start with peekaboo behind my hands, then I hide behind the couch for 10 seconds, then I step all the way out of the room for 15 seconds, come back and cheer that I found him. It’s just play, but it’s teaching him that I always come back, even when he can’t see me. I also started leaving an old cotton t-shirt I’d worn all day in his crib with him. The familiar smell seems to calm him when he wakes up, and it was a zero-effort change I’d never have thought of if a mom at the playground hadn’t mentioned it. The last small shift was moving both his morning and afternoon naps 15 minutes earlier. I realized I’d been keeping him up longer to “tire him out”, but he just got overtired, and overtired babies can’t settle their brains down to sleep. A 15-minute shift was so small I almost didn’t bother, but it made a noticeable difference.

Some nights are still hard. Two nights ago, he pulled himself up on the crib rail as soon as I turned out the light, and screamed for 45 minutes straight. I sat on the hallway floor, ate a crumbly chocolate chip granola bar, and scrolled through a sleep thread on my mom group, feeling like I was doing everything wrong. He eventually fell asleep, face pressed against the rail, my old t-shirt bunched under his cheek. Some nights are good, too. Last night, he fussed for 7 minutes after I put him down, then fell asleep, woke up once at 1 AM, I did my quick check-in, and he went back down till 6:20 AM. That’s a win around here.

I used to think that once you got baby sleep sorted, it stayed sorted. That any messy patch meant I’d messed up his routine somehow. 8 months of complicated sleep taught me that sleep shifts as they grow, that their brains are building new stuff every week, and sometimes that messes with the schedule you worked so hard to build. It’s not a failure, it’s just part of them getting bigger. These small changes haven’t fixed everything, I still don’t get a full night’s sleep every night, and I still drink more cold coffee than hot. But it’s better than it was, and that’s enough for right now.
