Why Good Students Sometimes Don’t Excel in a Course (and What Actually Helps)
The first time Maya came to my office hours, she didn’t wait for me to ask what was going on. She sat down, opened a three-ring binder, and a small avalanche of color-coded notes slid out across the desk. She caught them before they hit the floor, took a breath, and said, “I study for at least two hours every night. I make flashcards. I reread every chapter. And I’m still getting B-pluses. What am I doing wrong?”
Maya was a junior in my American history course. She wasn’t in danger of failing. But she was frustrated in the way that good students get frustrated when effort doesn’t line up with results. And I’d seen this before—smart, diligent kids who had somehow learned that studying meant exposing yourself to material until it felt familiar. The problem was that familiar isn’t the same as knowable.
I asked her to show me what she did with her flashcards. She flipped through them. The cards were neat, with terms on one side and definitions on the other. She explained that she went through them until she could recognize every term. Then she reread her highlighted notes. Then she read the chapters again, often late into the night.
“Okay,” I said. “Close the notebook.”
She looked at me like I’d asked her to do a backflip.
“Pick a topic we covered last week,” I said. “Reconstruction. Just tell me what it was about. In your own words, no notes.”
She started off strong for about ten seconds. Then she stopped. “I know this,” she said. “I just can’t explain it if you ask me like that.”
That, right there, was the whole answer.
What Maya had been doing was passive. Rereading and highlighting and flipping through flashcards all feel productive because the material looks familiar when you’re looking at it. But when you take the notes away, a lot of that confidence evaporates. The skill she needed wasn’t more study time. It was retrieval practice—testing herself instead of just reviewing.
I suggested she try a simple routine for the next unit. After reading a section, she should close the book and write down everything she could remember in five minutes. Then she should check what she missed. Flashcards were fine, but she needed to flip them the other way—look at the term, then say the definition out loud before turning the card over. And at the end of the week, she needed to give herself a small practice test without any notes. No grade, no pressure. Just a way to see what actually stuck.
“That’s going to feel harder,” I told her. “That’s the point.”
She came back two weeks later with a different look on her face. “It’s weird,” she said. “It feels like I’m studying less, but on Monday I remembered things from last week without having to look them up.” That’s the thing people don’t expect about retrieval practice. Struggling to pull something out of your memory feels uncomfortable in the moment, but it’s what tells your brain the information matters. It’s a lesson I keep having to learn myself, honestly.
A few days later, I had a different kind of conversation. Jamal from the same class was sitting outside my room before first period, helping a boy from the period before with a study guide. I hadn’t heard Jamal say much in class discussions, but he always scored well on tests. When I asked him how he prepped, he shrugged and said, “I just try to explain the stuff to my little brother. He’s ten. If I can’t make him understand it, I know I don’t get it well enough.”
I laughed, but it’s one of the best strategies a student can use. Teaching something to someone else—even an imaginary someone else—forces you to organize your thoughts and notice gaps in your reasoning. You can’t just recognize a concept; you have to explain why it matters and how it connects to other ideas. When students do this, they stop memorizing facts in isolation and start building a mental map. Jamal wasn’t naturally smarter than Maya. He’d just accidentally found a study method that matched how memory actually works.
The more I paid attention, the more I noticed that the students who excelled in my course weren’t necessarily the ones who spent the most hours. They were the ones who studied with fewer distractions, but more intensity. They asked specific questions. They tied what they learned to something they already cared about. And they weren’t afraid to be wrong in front of me.
Maya’s first office hours visit started with “I’m confused about everything.” Her second visit started with a real question. She had written it at the bottom of her notebook: “Why did the South pass Black Codes if they knew the federal government was going to object?” That question was specific enough that we could actually dig into it. We spent ten minutes looking at primary sources, and I could see something click.
For parents and teachers, this is a useful reminder. When your child or student says they’re studying hard and it isn’t working, try asking them to walk you through what “studying” means. If they describe highlighting chapters or rewriting notes, that’s not enough. It’s not a character flaw—they’ve probably never been shown anything different.
Some concrete shifts that tend to help:
First, make studying active. Instead of rereading, have your child close the book and summarize what they just read. If they can’t, they need to go back, but then try the summary again.
Second, use the “wrong answer” as a clue, not a failure. When Maya missed questions on her practice test, she felt like she’d wasted time. I told her those misses were exactly what she needed to study. A practice test that you do poorly on is more useful than a practice test you already know.
Third, break the “I’ll study tomorrow” cycle. Cramming is a trap. Sitting with a textbook for four hours the night before a test feels heroic, but very little of it will be remembered a week later. Short, daily review sessions work better. Fifteen minutes of recalling key terms or explaining a concept beats an hour of passive rereading.
Fourth, ask for help early and with questions attached. When a student says “I don’t get it,” there’s not much a teacher can act on. When they say “I can get through the facts, but I don’t understand why this matters,” that’s something to work with. Sometimes the best way to get good at a course is simply getting better at asking for help.
Maya didn’t turn into a history prodigy. She still found some of the readings dry, and she still got B’s on a few essays. But by the end of the semester, she didn’t feel as stuck. She told me she actually liked the feeling of closing a chapter and trying to explain it out loud to her cat. That may sound silly, but it’s real. The cat didn’t care about Reconstruction, but Maya had to make the argument coherent enough for someone—or something—to listen.
I don’t think excellence in a course is about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about noticing what you don’t understand before the test, and having the routine to do something about it. That’s a skill that doesn’t go away when the course ends.
