Why Does My Child Need to Know Some Things Before School Teaches Them? A Teacher’s Take
“So wait.” My daughter put down her pencil and looked at me with the kind of frustration only a fourth grader can channel. “Tomorrow we’re starting fractions. But Mrs. Alvarez said we need to ‘come to class ready’ for fractions. How can I be ready if we haven’t learned them yet? Isn’t that her job?”
It was a fair question. It’s the kind of question that stops you mid-sentence while you’re trying to help with homework and makes you realize you’ve never actually thought it through.
She wasn’t being lazy. She genuinely didn’t understand why she was being expected to know something before she was taught it. And the more I tried to explain, the more I heard myself saying things like “You already know more than you think” and “It’s just a preview,” none of which felt satisfying.
Because honestly, she had a point. School is supposed to teach things. That’s the whole deal. You go in not knowing, and you come out knowing. But there’s a piece in the middle that nobody talks about enough: learning requires some kind of anchor. And sometimes that anchor has to exist before the lesson even starts.
I finally figured out a way to show her what I meant a few days later, when she had to write a short story about a character who lives near the ocean. She had never seen the ocean. We live in a landlocked state, and the closest we’ve gotten is a lake with a beach that’s mostly mud. She knew the word “ocean.” She knew it was big and wet and had salt. But when she tried to describe the sound of waves, she wrote that they “hit the sand like a ball.” That was the best she could do, because she had never stood at the waterline and watched a wave pull back. She had no sensory memory to attach to the word.
How could I be mad? She had done nothing wrong. But it was such a clear example of what teachers mean when they talk about background knowledge. It’s not that you need to know the material before the material is taught. It’s that you need to have met the material somewhere before in your actual life—or at least in a story, a video, or a conversation—or else the lesson has nothing to grab onto.
When my son was in seventh grade, his science teacher started a unit on ecosystems. She used words like “producer” and “consumer,” and she explained them carefully. But one kid in the class had never been to a farm, never watched a documentary about animals, never planted a seed in his life. He could memorize the definitions, but he couldn’t feel what they meant. A producer was just a carbon-based thing that did photosynthesis. It was a list of facts, not an understanding.
Meanwhile, a girl in the same class had spent a week every summer at her grandmother’s house, where they grew tomatoes and raised chickens. She didn’t know the word “producer” ahead of time, but she knew that the tomato plant made something out of sunlight and dirt, and that the chicken ate the tomato and made an egg. When the teacher said “energy flow,” that girl’s eyes lit up. She wasn’t smarter than the boy. She just had more hooks on the wall.
That’s the whole thing. New information doesn’t just float into your brain. It has to attach to something you already know. If there’s nothing to attach to, the information stays on the surface. It disappears after the test, or it never really becomes usable.
The tricky part is that schools can’t give every kid every experience. They can do a lot, sure. They can do science labs and read alouds and class discussions. But there are thousands of tiny experiences that shape whether a child walks into a lesson ready to understand it. Did they ever play in the rain? Did they ever help measure flour for pancakes? Did they ever hear an adult say “we’re cutting the apple in half”? Those are not just sweet little moments. They are the raw material for fractions, weather, geometry, and life science.
I remember watching my daughter struggle with a word problem last year about a train leaving a station at the same time as another train. She couldn’t get past the fact that she had never been on an actual train. The math was fine. She just couldn’t picture two trains moving at different speeds, because in her mind, a train is something you see once in a while, not something you wait for on a platform. The problem wasn’t math. It was experience.
So what are you supposed to do about that as a parent? You can’t take your kid to an ocean, a train station, and a farm before every school unit. And honestly, you shouldn’t try.
What helps is not teaching ahead. It’s noticing out loud.
You don’t need to buy a workbook and work through next semester’s curriculum. You need to make small connections in daily life. When you cook dinner, say things like “we need a quarter of a cup of milk” even if you know your kid has no idea what a quarter cup is. Just say it. They’ll remember the sound of the phrase. When you’re driving, talk about miles and time. Ask “do you think we can make it in twenty minutes?” When you’re at the grocery store, let them estimate the total while you compare prices. They don’t have to be right.
You can also “preview” without pressure. Before a school unit on ancient Egypt, don’t lecture. Just leave a graphic novel about Egyptian myths on the coffee table. Or put on a documentary about pyramids while you’re making dinner. Or ask your kid “what do you think would happen if you wrapped a chicken in fabric and tried to preserve it?” They might laugh, but now they have an idea to attach to the word “mummification.” They won’t know the facts ahead of time. They’ll just have a before-picture. And when the teacher explains the real thing, the before-picture will help it stick.
The phrase I’ve started using with my own kids came from my oldest son’s teacher, who told me, “I’m not asking you to teach. I’m asking you to fill the world with enough stuff that when I need to point at it, your kid has already seen it.”
That changed things for me. It took the pressure off. I don’t need to be the one to explain fractions or ecosystems or supply and demand. I just need to make sure my kids have had enough slices of real life, enough books, enough shows, enough conversations about what things are, so that when a teacher draws a diagram or drops a technical word on the board, there’s already a place for it to land.
Now, when my daughter asks that question again—and she does, because she likes asking it—I tell her something like this: “School teaches you the names for things and how to connect them. But you have to have seen the things first. That part is kind of our job.” She rolls her eyes and says “fine” in a way that means she doesn’t fully buy it.
That’s okay. I don’t always fully buy it either, because there are plenty of lessons where a good teacher can start from zero and carry kids along. But I’ve seen enough tired kids staring at homework to know that the ones who’ve had a bit of life before the lesson are the ones who sit up straighter. Not because they’re smarter. Because they’ve already met this idea somewhere before. And once you’ve met an idea, it’s a lot less scary to shake hands with it again.
