My sister, his mom, was already reaching for her phone to email the teacher, when I reminded her of the observation split. The good news is you don’t need to plan big lessons to help kids practice this. It’s something you can weave into everyday conversations with just a few small changes. First, when your kid tells you a story that leads with an interpretation (someone is mean, something is boring, a seed is lazy), just ask them: “What’s one thing you saw that made you think that?” It’s a simple question that slows them down without making them feel wrong for their first thought.

Second, model the split yourself. Instead of saying “You’re mad about your game,” which is your interpretation, try “I see you threw your controller on the couch and crossed your arms. Are you mad?” I do this all the time in class now, and kids start copying it without me noticing.

Third, don’t push it when they’re really upset. If your kid just came home crying after a fight with their best friend, they don’t need a fact check right then. Wait until they’ve calmed down, then bring it up later if it makes sense.

Most kids can start doing this basic separation by age 7 or 8. By 10 or 11, they can do it for low-stakes situations on their own, but they’ll still slip up when they’re stressed or tired. And honestly? I still slip up. Last month I thought my new principal was mad at me because she didn’t wave at me in the hallway, and it turned out she forgot her glasses that day and couldn’t see anyone.

Last week, Mia brought her seed cup over to my desk to show me the tiny green sprout that popped up after she watered it.
