What Teachers Tell Students About Their Future With AI: Practical Advice Parents Can Use At Home
Last week, I sat through my last parent-teacher conference of the fall semester at 4:12 pm, my desk stacked with ungraded field trip permission slips and a half-decaf coffee that had gone cold an hour earlier. Mia Carter’s mom folded her hands on the edge of the desk and asked the question I’ve gotten at almost every conference this term: “Mia wants to write for a living. Isn’t AI just going to take that job before she even graduates college?”
I thought back to my digital literacy class on Monday, where we’d done a low-stakes exercise to talk about this exact thing. I had every student ask AI to write a 100-word personal essay about one of their core childhood memories, then write their own version next to it. But it left out the part where they sat on the curb after the firefighters left, ate the only dozen tamales that hadn’t burned through their packaging, drank warm root beer from the gas station down the street, and laughed because the insurance company had already approved their rebuild. AI didn’t know that specific, messy, happy detail that only Javi carries. That’s the part no one can copy, I told the class that day.
That’s the first thing we tell students when we talk about their future now: stop asking “will AI take my job?” and start asking “what do I have that AI can’t copy?” It’s not some vague call to “be more creative,” either. There’s a small, concrete thing parents can do at home to reinforce this: next time your kid talks about what they want to do when they grow up, or works on a school project, skip the generic “what do you want to be?” question and ask “what do you know about this that no one else does?” For Mia, that’s her years of struggling with teen acne, her deadpan sense of humor about drugstore skincare that pills or doesn’t work, the way her followers trust her because she’s been in their spot. AI can write a skincare review, but it can’t have Mia’s skin. That’s her edge.
The second piece of advice we give students is that AI is a tool, not a cheat. Too many kids have figured out they can use AI to do their homework for them, and too many adults have reacted by banning it entirely. That doesn’t prepare anyone for the real world, where almost every office will expect you to know how to use AI to get work done faster. The concrete habit we teach, and that parents can enforce at home, is simple: if you use AI to draft something, you have to change it to sound like you, and add what AI missed. Last year I had a student named Ty turn in a full book report on The Outsiders that was 100% written by AI. I didn’t fail him, and I didn’t send him to the principal’s office. I just sent it back with one note: “Add what this made you think about your own life.” He turned it around two days later with a whole section about how he got what Ponyboy felt like, because his older brother was in prison and he lived with his grandma who didn’t really get why he liked drawing so much. That paper was the best work he turned in all year, and we read it out loud to the class with his permission. Banning AI doesn’t work. Teaching kids to use it to do more, not less, does.
Third, we tell kids that AI gets things wrong all the time, so you have to build your own judgment that doesn’t depend on it. The concrete rule we use, that parents can adopt too, is this: any time you use AI for a project or assignment, you have to cross-check every fact with two non-AI sources. It can be a library book, a local newspaper archive, even an interview with someone who knows the topic. Last month a group of my students did a project on the 1968 integration of our town’s high school. AI said the first Black student to graduate was named Martha Bell. When they checked the microfilm at the public library, they found out it was Mary Bell, and that her granddaughter still lives 10 minutes from the school. They went and interviewed her, left with a box of old photos and a story about sneaking into the school gym for basketball games before integration was official, that the history books never mentioned. That project didn’t just get an A—it’s something those kids will remember long after they leave my class. That habit of checking, of not taking what AI says at face value, will matter no matter what job they end up with.
By the end of the conference with Mia’s mom, she was leaning back in her chair instead of forward, nodding. She said she’d only ever seen headlines about AI taking all the white-collar jobs, and she hadn’t stopped to think that it just changes what we need from people. I told her we don’t tell kids there’s nothing to worry about. No one knows what the job market will look like in 10 years, let alone 20. We’re just as in the dark as everyone else. But we’re not preparing kids for a specific job that exists right now. We’re giving them small habits that will let them adapt, no matter what happens.
I walked out to my car after that, it was drizzling, and I stopped at the corner gas station to pick up the milk I’d written on my sticky note reminder. I thought about when I was Mia’s age, and everyone was saying the internet would kill all the journalism and publishing jobs. Some jobs changed, sure, but new ones popped up that no one could have predicted back then. I don’t have all the answers. Last week a student asked me if we’ll all be working for AI someday, and I told him I don’t know. But I do know that the kids who can bring their own specific story to the table, who can use AI instead of letting it use them, who can spot when AI is wrong—those kids will be fine, whatever the future ends up looking like.
