What surprised me most was how practical the advice for everyday life is, stuff parents can actually implement at home without signing up for expensive AI classes or rearranging their kid’s entire course load. Ms. Henderson said they don’t tell kids to avoid AI, that’s useless — kids are going to use it, and it’s a tool, like a calculator was for our generation. Instead, they tell kids to use AI for the boring part of work, so they can practice the hard, human part. If you have to write a research paper, let AI summarize 10 long sources so you don’t waste three hours sifting through fluff. Then you do the work of connecting the sources and building your own argument. If you’re learning to code, let AI write the repetitive basic lines, then you fix the errors and build the one-of-a-kind part of your program. It’s a simple shift that makes the tool work for you, not the other way around.

She also said they encourage parents to have kids do one small AI-free task a month to build their own judgment. It doesn’t have to be a big project. If your kid likes baking, have them create a new cookie recipe from scratch instead of asking AI for one. If they like posting on their personal social media, have them write a whole caption without AI help. If they like drawing, have them draw a portrait of a family member without using AI references. It just builds the habit of trusting your own take, instead of defaulting to what the machine gives you.

She added that the worst mistake kids and parents make is chasing the latest AI trend. A kid came to her last year who wanted to skip his four-year graphic design program to do a six-month prompt engineering certificate he saw on TikTok. She talked him into doing the certificate alongside his first year of design school, because prompt engineering as we know it will probably be obsolete in five years — AI is already getting better at writing its own prompts. The skill that stays is knowing what to prompt for, which comes from knowing your field and knowing people.

I went home that night and tried this small shift with my 10th-grade son, who was working on a history project about the 1968 Memphis sanitation strike. He was planning to have AI write his outline.
