Last Tuesday, I herded my 8-year-old Jax and 11-year-old Lila off the school bus, dumped their crumpled backpacks by the front door, and reached for the AC thermostat like I do every 90-plus-degree June afternoon. The screen went dark. I flipped the light switch by the entryway – nothing. The whole neighborhood had gone quiet, except for the distant hum of a neighbor’s generator. We’d gotten the alert three days before: rolling blackouts were scheduled all week, as the record heat pushed our regional power grid to its breaking point.
Jax immediately collapsed onto the doormat and groaned that he was going to miss the new episode of his favorite cartoon after day camp. Lila pulled out her phone, swiped it a few times, and frowned – her battery was at 18%, and her end-of-year statistics project, due the next morning, was saved only on her laptop. When we got tired of sitting in the backyard, we walked three blocks to the public library, only to find the doors locked with a handwritten sign taped up: “Closed early due to AC failure. Sorry for the inconvenience.” We ended up at the small ice cream shop downtown, which had stayed open thanks to the owner’s backup generator. Lila asked the owner, Mike, how much it cost to run that thing all day. He wiped down the counter and told her it’s $50 a day in extra fuel, on top of what he already pays for electricity. He’s run the shop for 28 years, so he could afford to buy the generator when the blackouts started getting worse five years ago. But the new coffee shop two blocks over can’t afford one, he said, so they close every time the power goes out.
That conversation right there was enough learning for a week. We didn’t need a textbook. I didn’t have to have all the answers. All I did was ask Lila to write down one thing that surprised her on a napkin, and we talked about it while we ate our scoops.
The practical stuff I’ve picked up works for both parents and teachers, and it’s all low effort. First, when the power goes out or school gets dismissed early because of heat-related grid issues, start with validation, not silver linings. Instead of saying “at least you get a day off,” try: “It makes total sense to be upset. You were looking forward to field day/finishing your project/seeing your friends, and this is a hassle.” That specific phrase acknowledges their frustration instead of brushing it off, and it stops most big meltdowns before they start.
For teachers, keep a bin of small, no-power essentials near your classroom door: a handful of battery-powered mini fans, extra water bottles, printed activity sheets, and a few card games. If you have to move class outside or power drops mid-lesson, you don’t have to scramble to improvise. For parents, keep a small emergency kit by your front door too: one portable charger, extra ice packs, and a deck of cards, that’s all you need for a few hours without power.
When kids ask why the grid is failing, you don’t have to explain complex energy policy. You can just say: “The people who built this grid built it for the weather we used to have. Now our weather is hotter, so we need to build a new grid that works for the weather we have now.” You can turn it into a tiny, low-stakes project: walk around the neighborhood and count how many houses have solar panels, or draw what a better grid would look like, like Jax did. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
We got our power back around 8 that night. The house cooled down by midnight, Lila finished her project before homeroom the next day, and Jax got to watch his cartoon after dinner the next night. But I still think about what Lila said under the oak tree, before we left for the ice cream shop: “I thought grown-ups would have fixed this before it got this bad.” I told her I thought that too. We keep a small blackout kit by the door now, and we talk about the grid every time we get a new heat alert. It’s not a solution to the whole problem, but it’s enough for right now.
