Second Semester BCA: Practical Planning Guidance for Students and Parents
The screen door creaked open last Saturday, and 19-year-old Arjun, the kid who lives two doors down, poked his head in holding a crumpled second semester BCA syllabus and a half-empty iced coffee. He’d heard my husband and I both work in ed tech, and he’d been stuck staring at his course list for three days not knowing what to do next beyond showing up for lectures. “I got Bs on all my first semester finals,” he said, sinking into the porch swing, our golden retriever immediately dropping a slobbery tennis ball on his lap. “Everyone’s already talking about internships and coding bootcamps and getting a job before graduation. I don’t even know if I should be skipping class to study extra, or join 10 clubs, or what. What do I actually plan for right now?”
Arjun’s mom is a high school teacher I grab coffee with sometimes, and she’d mentioned a week earlier that she was stressed too. A cousin of Arjun’s had just gotten a pre-placement offer from a tech company after his second year, and she couldn’t help but wonder if Arjun was falling behind before he’d even really gotten started. That’s the thing I see so often with parents of undergrads in tech-focused degrees: every social media post from another kid’s achievement turns into panic that your kid isn’t doing enough, right?
I pulled out a notebook and started jotting down the small things we talked through that afternoon, no 5-year plans or big fancy goals. First, before you do anything extra, lock in your core classes. Second semester BCA is when you stop taking all the general ed filler and start learning the actual building blocks of the field: C programming, basic data structures, discrete math. A lot of kids buy into the hype that college coursework is useless and you should just teach yourself everything online. I’ve seen too many second semester students skip lectures to work on random projects that are way above their skill level, then end up bombing their midterms because they missed the explanation of how loops actually work. The concrete rule we agreed on was this: no extra work comes before your regular class work. Show up to every lecture, do every assignment the night before it’s due, and spend 30 extra minutes after every coding lecture working through one extra practice problem on that day’s topic. That’s it. No 3-hour cram sessions, no skipping class to learn a new framework. Just 30 minutes, every day you have coding class.
For parents, that translates to a small shift in how you talk about school. Instead of opening with “Have you applied for any internships yet?” or “What’s your plan for after graduation?” try asking “What’s one thing you learned in coding this week that felt cool?” It takes the pressure off, and it gives you a window into what they actually enjoy, instead of just pushing them to hit arbitrary milestones. Arjun told me he’d had fun messing around with conditional statements in his first week of class, but he hadn’t told anyone that because all anyone asks about is future plans.
Next, pick one extra activity, not five. Arjun told me he’d already signed up for four coding clubs, two free online bootcamps, and a campus hackathon that’s three months away. He was already overwhelmed and it was only the second week of the semester. Most second semester students don’t have the skill set to build anything meaningful for a hackathon, and joining five clubs just means you’ll end up going to zero meetings. We talked about cutting everything back to just one thing: he joined the campus coding club, which does weekly beginner practice sessions, and dropped the rest. If that clicks after a couple months, he can add something else later. The same goes for learning new skills: don’t try to learn C, Python, JavaScript, and React all in one semester. Stick to what your class is teaching, and if you finish that early, add one extra related thing. That’s low-stakes, no burnout.
The only other thing we added to his plan was to start a tiny portfolio, no frills. By the end of the semester, he just needs two small projects that he built from scratch using what he’s learned in class. A number guesser game, a command line to-do list, anything that shows he can actually write code that works. He just needs a free Github account, which takes 10 minutes to set up, and upload his projects there. You don’t need a fancy custom website or a full-stack e-commerce project at second semester. Recruiters just want to see you’ve actually built something, not just read about it.
If a student is curious about different career paths, there’s a low-effort way to explore that too: spend one hour a month watching a casual conversation with someone working in a field that sounds interesting. No need to pay for a course or commit to a new track right now. Just see what a typical work day looks like for a web developer, a cyber security analyst, a data entry specialist, and see what sparks interest. That’s enough planning for career direction at this stage.
Arjun left that afternoon, crumpled syllabus (still a little slobbery) tucked under his arm, saying he was going to go home and cancel three of the unused course subscriptions he’d paid for. A week later he texted me a screenshot of his number guesser game, it worked perfectly, and he was excited to start the next one. He still doesn’t know if he wants to go into cyber security, web development, or data science after graduation. He still gets stressed when his classmates talk about all the things they’re doing that he’s not. That’s normal. Right now, planning isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about taking small, steady steps that don’t leave you burnt out before you’re even halfway done with your degree. We’re meeting next weekend to help him set up his Github profile, and we’ll go from there. No rush.
