PISA Scores Are Dropping Everywhere—What That Actually Means for Your Kid
The last parent-teacher conference of the year was supposed to be a quick check-in. My son Leo is in seventh grade, a solid B student, no real complaints. But when I sat down opposite Ms. Alvarez, she didn’t open with his grades like she usually does. She had a printed article on the desk, a chart of falling lines, and she tapped it once with her finger.
“Did you see the PISA results?” she asked.

So when everyone’s numbers go down at the same time, it’s not because teachers suddenly got worse, or parents suddenly stopped caring. It’s because the test is measuring something that’s changed.”
I asked what had changed. She didn’t have a neat answer, but she told me what she sees in her classroom.
“Kids today know a lot of stuff, but they know it differently. They can pull up a video on how to solve a quadratic equation, but they can’t tell me what the volume of a glass of orange juice would be in milliliters. They’re brilliant at finding information and terrible at deciding if the information is useful. They can multitask like nothing I’ve ever seen, but they can’t sit with a single problem for more than ninety seconds without asking to check their phone.”
I thought about Leo at home. He’s the same. He can spend two hours on a TikTok binge and then cry over a single algebra worksheet. I always assumed he was lazy. Ms. Alvarez was implying something different: that his brain is adapting to a world that gives him fragments, not wholes.
She said, “The PISA tests aren’t really about math and reading. They’re about endurance. They’re about holding a messy, complicated problem in your head without looking up the answer. And we—parents, schools, entire countries—have stopped practicing that skill.”
That’s when the conversation shifted from a lecture to something more useful. She must have seen the stress on my face. She gave me three practical things she wished more parents would do, and none of them involved flashcards.
The first one was about reading. Not comprehension worksheets—actual reading for pleasure. She said the best predictor of PISA scores isn’t whether a kid is in advanced classes; it’s whether they regularly read books they chose for fun. But she clarified what that really means.

So we made a rule: after dinner, the Wi-Fi goes off for a half hour. We don’t require Leo to read specific things. He sometimes reads manga, sometimes old issues of Sports Illustrated, sometimes he re-reads Harry Potter for the fifth time. And it’s not magical—he still complains—but he’s building a habit of sustained attention. That’s what PISA is really measuring.
The second thing Ms. Alvarez said surprised me even more. She told me to talk about numbers in the real world, but not as a quiz. Not “what’s 20% of this?” Rather, to narrate my own thinking out loud.

I tried this a few days later at the supermarket. Leo was trailing behind me, earbuds in. I pointed to a small jar of pasta sauce and said, “This one’s three-fifty. The big jar on the next shelf is five-ninety, but it’s about three times as much. So actually the big one’s cheaper, even though it looks more expensive.”
He pulled out one earbud. “Wait, three times is under six bucks?” He did a quick calculation in his head. “Oh, yeah. Four ounces per dollar versus seven.” Then he put the earbud back in. It wasn’t a bonding moment. It wasn’t a triumph. But it was a step toward treating math as a decision-making tool, not a hurdle.
The third piece of advice was the hardest for me to accept. Ms. Alvarez told me to let Leo be bored.
“I know it sounds counterproductive,” she said. “But our kids are overstimulated to the point where they’ve lost the capacity for practice. Practice is boring by definition. You’re repeating something that isn’t interesting yet to build fluency. The PISA results reflect the fact that kids no longer have the tolerance for repetitive, slow, unglamorous work. They’ve been trained to expect novelty every five seconds.”
She’s right. How many times have I handed Leo a worksheet and watched him dramatically collapse after thirty seconds, claiming it’s too hard? It’s not too hard. It’s too dull. And dullness has become unacceptable to him.
So we started doing something every weekend: an hour of “quiet work time” where the whole family sits at the kitchen table with our own tasks. I pay bills or write emails. My husband reads reports. Leo does his homework or practices his instrument. No phones. No TV. No one talks much. It was miserable the first two weeks. He asked the time every ten minutes. But slowly, that silence started to feel less like punishment. It became a shared space where everyone was doing hard, unglamorous things. And I noticed his endurance creeping up.
Now, months later, the PISA headlines no longer feel like a personal indictment. The test scores are a symptom, not a disease. The disease is a world that has trained kids to solve problems the moment they appear, with a quick search or a group chat or a photo filter. It’s not their fault, and it’s not any single teacher’s fault, either.
I don’t know if these small changes will show up on any international assessment. Leo isn’t fifteen yet. He might still fall behind when he takes PISA. But I’ve stopped caring about the rankings.
What I care about is watching him put his phone down without being asked and read a chapter in a book. What I care about is hearing him mutter, “Wait, that’s actually cheaper per serving,” in the grocery aisle. What I care about is the quiet, awkward, beautiful hour when the kitchen table is full of people who are doing boring, hard work and slowly getting better at it.
The scores will recover when we care less about the scores and more about the endurance. Or maybe they won’t. Maybe the world has changed too much for those old tests to matter. But if there’s one thing I took from that conversation with Ms. Alvarez, it’s this: the goal isn’t to be good at global rankings. The goal is to be good at finishing a thought, solving a real problem, and sitting still in a world that rewards none of those things.
That’s a skill no test score can measure. But it’s the only one that counts in the end.
