Is AI Helping Kids Learn Or Just Helping Them Avoid Hard Work? A Teacher’s Perspective

Last Wednesday, I finished collecting 7th grade pre-algebra homework 10 minutes after the first period bell, and Javi still hung back by the door, his scuffed black skateboard propped against the cinder block, one foot tapping the linoleum. I’d marked his paper full score the night before, but every answer was perfect, not a single step of factoring written out between the final numbers. When I asked him about it, he shoved his hands in his hoodie pockets and stared at his shoes. “I used ChatGPT. I got stuck on three problems, my mom was working late, and I just wanted to get done for skate practice. It was easier.”

I didn’t yell. I’ve been teaching middle school for 12 years, and I’ve got a 13-year-old son at home who uses AI for his own homework, so this isn’t a new conversation. But it got me thinking about the question every parent and teacher I know argues about over coffee: when kids use AI, are they learning more, or just cutting corners on the work that actually matters?

That weekend, I caught my son Leo at the kitchen table working on his The Giver book report. He’d pulled up ChatGPT next to his Google Doc, and when I leaned over, I saw the AI had already cranked out a three-paragraph analysis of Jonas’s relationship with the Giver. It was good, too — way more polished than anything a 13-year-old would write on a first pass. But when I asked Leo what he thought the most important part of the book was, he immediately said the scene where Jonas finds the dead twin babies in the freezer. That part wasn’t anywhere in the AI draft, because AI couldn’t know that Leo cried for 10 minutes after he read that scene, since his baby cousin had been born just the week before.

That’s the line I’ve started drawing, between AI that helps and AI that lets you skip the hard part. Javi skipped the hard part: the messy, frustrating work of getting stuck, tracing through a wrong step, trying again until factoring clicks. That work isn’t just about getting the right answer — it’s about building the stamina to work through something that doesn’t make sense right away. When Leo used AI to get past his writer’s block after he’d already written down his own ideas, that was different. He was stuck on how to explain why that scene hit him so hard, so he asked AI for examples of how other writers talk about unexpected grief in books, then he rephrased it to sound like him. He did the hard part — connecting the book to his own life — and AI just helped him climb over a small bump.

I’ve started testing small, simple rules in my classroom, and I use the same ones at home with Leo, that don’t require banning AI or turning every homework check into a big investigation. The first one is a 1-sentence “AI use note” at the top of any assignment if they used it. They just have to write what they used it for, and what part of the work they did themselves. If a kid writes “AI checked my math answers, I wrote all the steps myself,” that’s fine. If they write “AI did the whole essay, I copied it,” that’s a conversation we have, not an automatic zero. It takes 10 extra seconds for them to write it, and 2 extra seconds for me to read it, so it’s not a lot of extra work for anyone.

The second rule I use for bigger projects is “three ideas first.” No opening AI before you write down three of your own original ideas about the topic. For my history unit on ancient civilizations, kids can’t use AI to brainstorm what to write about until they’ve jotted down three things they personally find interesting about the Maya, whether that’s their calendar or their chocolate or the ball games they played. It keeps them from just letting AI do the thinking for them before they’ve even tried.

I’ve also seen AI help kids who’ve always struggled with busywork, so they can focus on the hard, meaningful parts. One of my students has dyslexia, and she used to spend three times as long fixing spelling and grammar as she did writing her story, so she’d get frustrated and quit before she finished. Now she writes the whole story herself, gets all her ideas down, then uses AI to fix the spelling and commas. She just finished a 12-page story about a girl who can talk to horses, which she never would have done a year ago. The hard part — coming up with the plot, building the characters, telling her story — that’s all her. AI just took care of the annoying part that was stopping her from learning.

Last week, Javi turned in his factoring homework with a little note at the top: “I used AI to check my final answers, I wrote all the steps.” He missed one step, so he came in after class and we worked through it together. It took 10 minutes, and by the end he rolled his eyes and said “that’s actually not that hard,” which is the best thing you can hear as a teacher.

We’re all still figuring this out. Some weeks I catch three kids turning in fully AI-generated essays, and some weeks I see a kid use AI to pull ahead in a subject they used to struggle with. I don’t think there’s a one-size-fits-all answer, and I don’t think banning AI is going to work anyway. The line isn’t whether AI is good or bad for learning. It’s whether the hard, messy, important work of learning is still done by the kid. So far, that’s the only rule I need.
