The first time I noticed something was off was a Tuesday night in late September. My daughter, Maya, was sitting at the kitchen table, her biology textbook propped open, a highlighter in her hand. That sentence—”I don’t even know where to start”—became a recurring theme that fall. Maya had always been a decent student, the kind who got by on good memory and last-minute cramming. That’s what worked for her. For a friend’s kid, it was the opposite—he needed to do the homework first and review later. The point isn’t the specific schedule. There were still rough patches. She bombed a pop quiz on cell cycle phases, and we had one evening where she threw her pencil and said she was never going to get into college. One thing I still wonder about is whether we should have started earlier. Maybe the freshman year is too late to build these habits. But watching her younger brother, I can already see the same pattern forming—he avoids math homework until the last minute. We haven’t solved it with him yet. He’s a different kid, and what worked for Maya probably won’t work for him. I guess that’s the real lesson. There’s no secret formula.
