Group vs 1:1 Coding Classes for 8 Year Olds: What I Learned As A Parent
The crumpled flyer was stuck to the edge of our kitchen table by a glob of grape jelly, the neon block letters screaming “KIDS CODING CLUB” peeking out from under my 8-year-old Milo’s half-eaten bowl of Goldfish. He’d run in from the playground after school, shoving it at me before he even took off his backpack: “All my friends are joining, I want to make Minecraft mods too please please.” When I pulled up the sign-up page that night, I froze. Two options, no explanation: small group classes, or one-on-one private lessons. I had no idea which was right for an 8-year-old, and every Google result I clicked told me something different.
I called the coding club manager to ask for advice, and she offered two free trial sessions—one of each, so we could test it out. I jumped at the chance. The first trial was the 6-kid group class. I waited in the lobby scrolling through grocery lists, when Milo came bouncing out 45 minutes later, talking a mile a minute. He couldn’t stop laughing about how Lila accidentally spawned a giant TNT cube that blew up the whole server the whole class was working on, and everyone cheered when it happened. He’d paired up with another boy who loves hot dogs as much as he does to build a hot dog race car game, and he couldn’t wait to go back to add a ketchup speed booster. But when I asked him what he’d actually learned that day, he paused and kicked a loose tile by the door. He said he got stuck when his car kept falling off the track, and he waited almost 10 minutes for the teacher to get to him. By the time she came over, he just copied what his partner did to fix it, and he never got to add the unicorn decal he wanted because the class had to move on to the next lesson.
The 1:1 trial was the same time the next week, with the same lead teacher. It was just Milo and her in a small room the whole time, and they got straight to work on the Minecraft wolf mod he’d been talking about for weeks. When he got stuck on the movement code, she sat right next to him and broke it down step by step, using a little example with a rubber chicken to explain how loops work. She let him mess around for 25 minutes straight adding rainbow fur to all his pet wolves, no rush to move on to a pre-planned lesson. When he came out of the class, though, he just shrugged and said “it was okay.” I pressed him for stories, for any funny mishaps or cool things he’d made, and he had nothing to add. There was no one to laugh at the ridiculously colored wolves, no one to show off to before class even started.
After the trials, I ran into Milo’s second grade tech teacher at pickup, and I asked her what she thought. She’s taught coding to 7-9 year olds for 12 years, so I trusted her take more than any influencer online. She said that for 8 year olds, the whole point of starting coding isn’t to master syntax or build a professional app by the end of the year. It’s to figure out that coding is just a fun way to make stuff you care about, not another homework assignment. That stuck with me, and she gave me three concrete things to weigh that I hadn’t thought of before.
First, start with why your kid wants to join. If they’re begging to go because their best friend is in the class, or they want to make silly projects with other kids, group is always a better fit for this age. If they’ve already been tinkering on Scratch every weekend after homework and have a specific project they’re dying to build, 1:1 is worth the extra cost to help them get there faster. Second, if you go the group route, never sign up for a group bigger than 6 kids for 8 year olds. A lot of places advertise “small groups” that are 10 or 12 kids, which is just too many for one teacher to check in on every kid when they get stuck. If your kid is shy like mine, just ask the teacher to do quick check-ins with them every 5 minutes—most are happy to do it, it’s not a big favor to ask. Third, be honest about your budget. 1:1 lessons are two to three times more expensive than group for this age, and most 8 year olds will jump ship to a new activity in three months. There’s no shame in starting with group to test the waters, no matter what fancy coding enrichment websites tell you.
I ended up switching Milo to the 4-kid small group the club offered. It was a little more expensive than the 6-kid section, but still way cheaper than 1:1, and the teacher agreed to check in with him early every class since he’s slow to raise his hand. It’s been three months now, and he still goes every Wednesday after school. Last week he brought home a little interactive project he made with the other two boys in his group: when you click a photo of our family dog, it barks and pulls up a picture of Milo covered in ice cream at the beach. He dragged every guest we had over the weekend over to the laptop to click it, over and over.
I still don’t know if this is the start of some lifelong passion or just another phase he’ll drop when all his friends switch to the new rock climbing gym after winter break. So far, the small group works for him: he gets the social fun that makes him excited to show up every week, and he gets enough one-on-one help to not get frustrated and quit. That’s all I really needed, anyway. There’s no one-size-fits-all perfect answer, just the one that fits your kid right now.
