Every semester, at some point between the first progress report and the midterms, my son Ben would hit the same wall in his least favorite class. This year it was chemistry. I’d find him slumped over the kitchen table, a notebook open to a page of half-finished equations, his pen clicking like a nervous tic. “I just don’t get it,” he’d say, and then stare at the periodic table like it had personally betrayed him.
I’m not a teacher. I don’t have a background in science. But I’ve been the homework-wrangling parent for eleven years, and I’ve learned that “I don’t get it” rarely means what it sounds like. Most of the time, it means “I’ve been rereading the same paragraph for twenty minutes,” or “I’m so worried about failing that I can’t remember what I read.” The night Ben had to memorize functional groups and somehow also understand why they mattered, he threw his pencil down and announced that the course was “impossible.”
That moment was the turning point, not because I had a brilliant solution, but because I realized I had been doing the wrong thing for weeks. I had been helping him with the content—trying to explain electron shells with vague gestures, looking up YouTube videos, hoping something would stick. It didn’t. So that night, instead of asking him to try a new video, I asked him to close his notes. I told him to just tell me anything he remembered from the chapter, no looking, no pressure.
He stared at me like I had asked him to recite a poem in ancient Greek. Then, with a lot of grumbling, he managed to say two things: “There are these groups of atoms that do stuff,” and “It has something to do with oxygen sometimes.” That was it. He had spent two hours reading and highlighting, and the only thing his brain had held onto was a vague hunch about oxygen.
I wasn’t alarmed. Actually, I was relieved. Because we finally had a clear diagnosis: the problem wasn’t his intelligence or even his effort. The problem was that his study method was pure passive reading. He was moving his eyes over text, feeling like he was working, but his brain was mostly on standby. He’d highlight a sentence because it looked important, but he never had to retrieve it, so it never stayed.
That week, we changed the routine. No more long stretches of highlighting until his hand cramped. Instead, I became the world’s most annoying quizmaster. We would read one small section of the textbook—maybe two pages—and then I’d shut the book and ask him to explain it back to me like I was a five-year-old. At first, he hated it. “You were there when we read it,” he’d complain. But that was the point. If he could explain it without looking, we knew it had actually made it into his head. If he got stuck, he’d peek at the heading, and we’d try again.
The results were slow, but they were real. The first week, he only got through about five pages an hour. That felt painfully slow compared to his old speed of highlighting twenty pages in twenty minutes. But the next morning, for the first time ever, he walked into class knowing what the lecture was going to be about. The teacher asked a question about the relationship between two functional groups, and Ben, to his own astonishment, raised his hand.
The other big adjustment came when I stopped hovering. That sounds counterintuitive, I know. But I realized I was doing a lot of the heavy lifting in our sessions without meaning to. I’d say, “Okay, so what about this one?” and then indicate the correct answer with my eyebrows. I’d ask leading questions. I was so eager to help him succeed that I was supplying all the connections. He was just nodding along.
So I backed off and made the sessions more like a game of ping-pong. I would only ask the question, not hint at the answer. If he got it wrong, I’d say, “Hmm, that’s not what the book said. Let’s find the exact sentence.” Then we’d flip to the page and read it aloud, and he’d often say, “Oh, right, so the nitrogen is the key part, not the hydrogen.” When he made that correction himself, it stuck. When I made it for him, it evaporated by the next day.
There was another thing that surprised us both. Ben had a habit of doing all his studying in one marathon block after dinner. By 9:30, he was exhausted and convinced the course was too hard. We experimented with breaking his time up. Instead of ninety straight minutes, he did two twenty-five minute chunks with a ten-minute break in between to bounce a basketball in the driveway. It felt like so little time, but the focus during each chunk was much sharper. He wasn’t just going through the motions; he was actively thinking because the clock was ticking.
We also discovered the power of interleaving, though I didn’t call it that at the time. Ben used to study one unit’s material until the night before the test, then move on forever. But chemistry, like most courses, builds on itself. The first week’s molecules were the foundation for the third week’s equations. So once a week, instead of reviewing the newest material, we pulled out the old flashcards from three chapters ago. It felt like going backwards, but it was actually doing something important: it forced his brain to work harder to retrieve old information, which locked it in deeper.
One of the most practical changes was tiny, but for Ben, it made the biggest difference. He used to read the chapter with a highlighter in his hand like a ceremonial torch. After our kitchen-table experiment, he started reading with a pencil instead. When he got to the end of a paragraph, he’d stop and write a one-line summary in the margin in his own words. He didn’t do it every time—it’s still a habit he’s building—but on the nights he did it, he could actually answer questions the next day. It was a simple act of generation; his brain had to produce the idea, not just receive it.
Now, midterm season has arrived. I see him in his room, flashcards spread out on the floor, and he’s talking to himself. He says, “The carbonyl group is a carbon double-bonded to oxygen,” out loud, then stops and points at a flashcard, trying to predict what the back says before he flips it. He’s not a perfect student. He still procrastinates on big projects, and there are plenty of weeks when he falls back into old habits and pats the textbook without really opening it. But last week, after a tough practice quiz he didn’t feel good about, he said, “I know why I missed that. I didn’t review the old material.” That awareness is something he never had in September.
I don’t think our job as parents is to make our kids love every subject or get straight A’s. I think it’s to help them see that “excelling” in a course isn’t about some mysterious gift of intelligence. It’s about finding the specific way their brain needs to be challenged. For Ben, it turned out to be about closing the book and making his memory do the work. It’s less comfortable, and it takes longer, but it’s real learning, and real learning has a funny way of showing up on the test.
Is the problem entirely solved? No. But the kitchen table feels calmer, and I hear fewer declarations that the course is “impossible.” He’s starting to trust that if he can explain it to me badly enough, he actually understands it. And on the nights when the flashcard stack is still tall, he just picks the next one. That, I think, is the whole skill—one small retrieval after another, until the material isn’t a wall anymore. For now, it’s working. We’ll see what next semester brings.
