The first time I saw a parent roll their eyes at a spelling list, I was standing in the hallway outside my third-grade classroom. Another teacher had just handed out the week’s words—eight short, common words like “because” and “friend”—and the parent muttered, “Are we still doing this? Don’t they need to learn thinking skills?”

I get it. I really do. For years, I’ve nodded along at education conferences where speakers warn against “drill and kill.” I’ve read the blog posts that say memorization crushes creativity, that it turns kids into parrots instead of problem-solvers. And for a long time, I believed them. I redesigned my lessons to focus on inquiry and discovery, and I almost stopped asking students to memorize anything at all. Then something surprised me.

We were doing a unit on poetry. I asked the class to memorize a short verse from a poem we’d read together—just four lines. You would have thought I’d asked them to conjugate Latin verbs. Several parents emailed with polite questions: Is this really necessary? My child is anxious about performing from memory. A couple of students outright refused, saying it was “boring and useless.” One child said, “Why do we need to memorize it? We have the worksheet.”

That moment stuck with me. Because honestly, they had a point. They could look at the worksheet. They could read the poem from the screen. But they couldn’t recall a single line of it without looking. And I started to wonder: was that really a sign of a deeper understanding—or just a convenient way to avoid the work of making something stick?

The funny thing is, the backlash against rote memorization didn’t come from nowhere. In the 1900s, classrooms were heavy on recitation. Kids chanted multiplication tables, spelling drills, state capitals, dates of wars. There was very little discussion, just repetition. A child could recite the preamble to the Constitution without having any idea what the words meant. That’s the version of rote memorization people are rightly suspicious of—mindless repetition without connection or meaning. No one wants to go back to that.

But somewhere in the last few decades, the pendulum swung hard in the other direction. The phrase “learn by doing” became a mantra. Education experts warned that memorization was passive, that students needed to construct their own understanding. Parents, myself included, began to see flashcards as a kind of educational sin. I remember sitting with my own daughter when she was six, drilling her on sight words, and feeling a pang of guilt. I thought I was somehow shortchanging her, that I should have been reading picture books or playing rhyming games instead.

What I didn’t realize at the time was that sight words are rote memorization. “The,” “said,” “where”—none of them follow simple phonics rules. You can’t decode them logically; you just have to remember them. And that’s true for so much of early learning. The alphabet? Rote. Days of the week? Rote. The sound each letter makes? Rote, at least initially. In fact, if you look closely, memorization is already embedded in almost everything we teach—we just don’t call it that when it’s presented in a playful way.

So why does the word itself feel so dirty? I think it’s because rote memorization is associated with punishment, with sitting still, with the kind of schooling that treats children as empty vessels to be filled. And that image is powerful. It makes people imagine a teacher standing at the front of the room, tapping a pointer on a chalkboard, while bored kids chant in unison. Nobody wants that for their children.

But what we often lose in the rush to reject that image is something important: memory is the foundation of thinking. You can’t have a complex thought about a poem if you don’t have the words of the poem in your head. You can’t do mental math if you don’t know basic facts fluently. You can’t engage in elaborate historical analysis if you can’t place events in a rough timeline. When we throw out all memorization, we’re not teaching kids to think critically—we’re just removing the raw material they need to think with.

I saw this clearly in my classroom during a science lesson about the water cycle. I had stopped asking students to memorize the stages—evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection. “That’s rote,” I thought. “They need to understand the process.” So I showed them diagrams, we did experiments, we watched videos. At the end of the unit, most of my students could explain the concept in their own words while looking at a diagram. But when I asked them to describe it without the diagram, many froze. They hadn’t actually remembered the vocabulary well enough to use it confidently. The understanding was there, but it was fragile, held up only by visual scaffolds.

Now, I’m not suggesting we should go back to memorizing two hundred facts a semester. That would be pointless. But I’ve found that a little bit of memorization, done well, actually supports understanding. It gives students a mental library they can pull from. The trick is to pair it with meaning, and to make the process less grim.

At home, that might look like turning a weekly spelling list into a game. My daughter and I turned her sight words into a scavenger hunt, sticking them on post-its around the kitchen, letting her race to find and read them. Later we used them to build silly sentences. The repetition was built in—you can’t help but practice a word when you’re hunting for it, reading it five times, writing it down, then arranging it into a sentence. She didn’t feel like she was memorizing. She felt like she was playing. But the result was the same: the words became automatic.

In the classroom, I’ve started using something I call “memory warm-ups.” It sounds fancier than it is. Every morning, I put two or three important facts on the board—a definition, a date, a key phrase from something we studied last month. Students have two minutes to say them out loud, cover them, and write them from memory. Then we check. It’s not a test. There’s no grade. The whole thing takes about five minutes. The kids groan at first, but they get used to it. And I’ve noticed that later, when we’re discussing a new topic, a student will say, “Oh, this is kind of like that water cycle thing.” They remember more than they used to. They make connections faster. The memorization gave them a scaffolding that the pure inquiry approach did not.

This isn’t just my gut feeling either. There’s plenty of cognitive science out there that supports what I’m saying. The brain is not a filing cabinet, but memory does work in predictable ways. The more we retrieve information, the stronger the neural pathways become. That’s why quizzes and flashcards aren’t just about drilling facts—they’re about helping the brain encode information for later use. Without that process, a classroom discussion can be engaging and inspiring, and you might remember having a good conversation, but you won’t remember the content. That’s not teaching; that’s entertainment.

I’m still a little hesitant to talk about this with parents, honestly. The word “memorization” triggers something. So now I frame it differently. I call it “building automaticity” or “creating mental anchors.” I explain that we’re not asking kids to memorize for its own sake, but to make the facts so familiar that they can think with them. I’ve even started inviting parents to try the five-minute memory warm-up at home, just as a curiosity. Some have done it and been surprised by how much their kids retain.

I still don’t want to go back to the old days. I don’t want my students sitting in silence, reciting multiplication tables like robots. But I also don’t want to pretend that memory doesn’t matter. It does. It matters a lot. The challenge isn’t choosing between memorization and understanding. It’s figuring out how to use memory in service of understanding, without making it a chore.

My daughter is nine now, and she still remembers that four-line poem from my classroom. She can recite it without thinking. She doesn’t love it, but she doesn’t hate it either—it’s just something she knows. That’s more than I could say for a lot of the things I tried to “teach” her without any form of repetition. She’s learned to ride a bike, and she’s learned to spell “because.” Both took practice. Both took memory. Neither hurt her.

Maybe the real problem with rote memorization isn’t that it’s bad. Maybe it’s that it’s been misunderstood. When we treat it as the enemy of creativity, we lose something. When we treat it as a tool, we gain a lot. I’m still figuring out the right balance. I think I always will be. But I’m no longer apologizing for asking my students to learn things by heart—because that’s exactly where understanding starts.
