Last month, I found my 10th grader Javi slouched at our kitchen table, a sticky Kool-Aid ring next to his laptop, half a bag of Goldfish spilling onto the linoleum, comparing two history projects he’d turned in that week. One was for his AP US History class with Ms. Henderson, a 32-year veteran teacher who’d sent home a syllabus at the start of the year with a big bold note: No AI allowed. Any use will count as cheating. The other was for his digital media elective with Mr. Torres, a younger teacher who spent last summer doing a free district workshop on integrating new tools into his lessons, and starts every unit with a mini-lesson on responsible use.

For Mr. Torres’ project on local civil rights history, Javi interviewed my mom, who’d marched as a teen in downtown Detroit. Transcribing three hours of that interview by hand would’ve taken four or five evenings. He used a tool his teacher recommended to transcribe it, which took 18 minutes. That gave him three extra nights to sort through clips that connected to what he was learning, edit a short video pairing her stories with old newspaper clips he found, and rewrite his analysis twice to make his argument clearer. He got an A, and his teacher wrote on the rubric that this was some of the most original work he’d seen all semester.

For Ms. Henderson’s project, which covered the same movement, Javi had to transcribe even two-minute excerpts of primary sources by hand, because any AI use was forbidden. He spent three straight nights just typing and formatting citations and transcripts, so he had 45 minutes the night before it was due to write his analysis. He got a B, with the comment “needs deeper analysis.” Javi just shrugged and said, “I didn’t have time for deeper analysis. I was too busy typing.”

That conversation opened my eyes to what’s actually happening in schools right now. At our last PTA meeting, I talked to a dozen other parents who’d seen the same dynamic: even in the same building, with the same student population and same funding, kids whose teachers are willing to learn new tools are pulling miles ahead of kids whose teachers refuse to touch them. Our district tech rep came to speak to us a few weeks later, and she laid out the numbers plain: less than 40% of our district’s teachers have done any formal training on guided tool use. About a third have outright banned any student use, no exceptions. Another quarter have dabbled but don’t teach students how to use it properly, so kids just use it to cheat. The remaining quarter have gotten training and are integrating it into daily lessons, and the results speak for themselves.

Last semester, students in classes with trained, tool-friendly teachers had 18% higher pass rates on end-of-course tests, and their critical thinking scores were 12% higher than students in classes where all new tools are completely banned. It’s not that those kids are smarter. Most come from the same neighborhoods, had the same test scores coming into the year. The only difference is their teacher’s willingness to adapt. A 7th grade math teacher I know, Sarah, did the training last year. She uses tools to make personalized practice worksheets for kids struggling with specific concepts, cutting her prep time for that work from an hour to 10 minutes, so she has more time to sit one-on-one with kids who need extra help. Her pass rate this year is 15% higher than the teacher down the hall who refuses to try anything new, who says all tools make kids lazy.

This gap isn’t shrinking—it’s widening. Every semester, more kids who’ve learned to use these tools as part of their school work get more comfortable, build better skills for the jobs and college classes they’re heading toward. They cut out the repetitive busy work that sucks up all their time, so they can focus on the actual thinking and creating that matters. Kids who go through years of school with teachers who resist don’t just miss out on extra time—they graduate having never learned how to use these tools responsibly, how to spot errors in output, how to lean on them to do better work instead of using them to skip work.

Most parents I talk to don’t know what to do about this. They don’t want to start a fight with their kid’s teacher, but they don’t want their kid left behind either. I’ve found a few small, low-friction things that work, no school board protest required.

First, if your kid’s teacher allows guided tool use, shoot them a quick email to ask which tools they recommend for your kid’s grade level, then set a 10-minute rule at home: any time your kid uses the tool for school, they have to show you what they used it for, and write one sentence about what they changed or added to the output, just like they’d cite a book. It takes almost no time, and it reinforces the responsible use habits they’re learning at school.

Second, if your kid’s teacher bans all use entirely, you can still teach basic responsible habits at home without breaking the teacher’s rules. Keep it to after-school study or personal projects like club work. When Javi was studying for his biology midterm, his teacher also banned tool use for graded work, so we only used it for studying. When he got stuck on cell division, we had the tool explain the tricky step in plain language, then he checked that explanation against his textbook to make sure it was right. That taught him to use the tool as a study aid, not a cheat, and it never interfered with his teacher’s class rules.

Third, if you’re active in your PTA, ask the board to set aside a small chunk of the budget to host free after-school training for teachers who want to learn. A lot of teachers want to pick up these skills, but they don’t have time or money to attend workshops on their own time. Our PTA hosted a two-hour session with our district tech rep last month, and 22 teachers showed up, most of them mid-career and veteran teachers who just wanted to learn the basics before trying it with their students.

Last week, I watched Javi use a tool to generate a first draft outline for his robotics club competition project. He threw out half of it, rewrote the other half, and said it saved him an hour of staring at a blank screen. I don’t know what job Javi will have when he graduates college, but I know these tools will be part of almost every field, from nursing to engineering to education. Right now, the gap between kids who are learning to use them well and kids who aren’t keeps growing. Districts are moving slow to train all teachers, and change is happening one classroom, one family at a time. I don’t see that shifting any time soon.
