I’ve Been Scrambling for a Classroom6x Replacement and It’s Way Harder Than I Thought It’d Be

Last month, I was sitting in my department’s grad lounge between my 9am stats lecture and 1pm undergrad office hour, brain completely fried from staring at p-values for an hour and a half. I pulled up Classroom6x like I always do, clicked on Slope, my go-to 10 minute time waster, and got a 502 Bad Gateway error.

I refreshed. Cleared my cache. Tried switching from campus wifi to my phone hotspot. Same thing. Turned out the whole site was down, gone, poof. I’d been using it for almost two years, through undergrad and now grad school, so this hit me way harder than it probably should have. I had a 45 minute gap, I wasn’t about to start grading 12 introductory bio quizzes that early. I ended up scrolling through our campus vending machine’s Instagram account for 20 minutes, which is how I learned they added a new sour candy variety, so that’s something, I guess. But it’s not Slope.

So I started looking for something similar. I figured it’d be easy, right? There are a million unblocked game sites out there for when you’re bored at school or work. What I didn’t expect was how bad most of them are.

First, I asked on Reddit. The first result I got was a site called Unblocked Games 77, I think. I clicked the link, got to the homepage, and every single click I made opened a new tab. I tried to click on 2048, and suddenly I had three new tabs open: one for a fake “your Windows has 3 viruses” alert, one for a weight loss gummy ad, and one for a car insurance site. My antivirus started blaring this loud beep right in the quiet lounge, and the guy next to me studying for the bar exam looked up like I was running a phishing scam out of my laptop. I closed all the tabs as fast as I could and swore off that one immediately.

Next, someone recommended a clone called Classroom3x. Said the interface was exactly the same, same library of games. I got excited, pulled it up, and yep, it looked identical. I clicked 2048, my go-to for when I’m nervous before office hours, and the game loaded, but half the screen was covered in a sticky pop-up ad for a payday loan service. The X button to close it? Fake. Clicking it just opened another ad. I spent five minutes trying to right-click and close the frame, ended up just closing the whole tab out of frustration.

I know, I know. I should be using these little gaps between classes to be productive. I should meditate, or stretch, or read that journal article I’ve been putting off for three weeks. I get it. But the thing is, I’m already “on” all the time. I’m sitting through lectures, answering emails at 10pm, helping undergrads work through problem sets, running to the grocery store after I’m done for the day. The only thing that resets my brain is 10 minutes of a mindless game that doesn’t ask anything of me. I don’t want a 10 minute productivity challenge. I don’t want to do a guided breathing exercise. I just want to roll a ball down an endless slope, crash into a brick wall, and start over. That’s it.

I found another one a week ago, actually. It was called something like School Break Games, and it was actually good for two days. All the games loaded, only one small banner ad at the top, no pop ups. I told my friend Lila, who’s also a grad student and wastes just as much time as I do, and she got just as excited as I was. Then yesterday, I pulled it up during my gap, clicked on Cookie Clicker, and it just redirected me straight to an online sports betting site. No warning, nothing. One day it’s a perfectly fine game site, next day it’s just all sports betting ads. I guess the domain got sold or something? It’s so frustrating.

Worst moment though? Last week I was testing a site in my office before my first student showed up. I have my laptop connected to the projector so students can see problem sets when we work through them, right? I wasn’t expecting anything, just clicked the link, and boom, full screen ad for a dating site for married people looking to cheat. I froze for two seconds, then slammed my laptop shut right as there was a knock on the door. My student was standing there, and I had to fumble with my laptop for five minutes pretending it had crashed mid-grading. They probably think I’m a huge creep now. I still see them in the hallway sometimes and they avoid eye contact. That’s the kind of awkward thing you can’t really explain away, you know?

Right now I still haven’t found anything that’s as good as Classroom6x was. It wasn’t fancy, it had a couple ads, but it worked. All the games loaded, it was unblocked on campus wifi, it didn’t try to give you malware or redirect you to random garbage. I don’t need a thousand new games, I don’t need a fancy mobile app, I just want to open a tab, click a game, play for 10 minutes, and close the tab. That’s all.

I talked to my 16 year old cousin last weekend, she gave me a link to one she uses for when she’s bored in study hall. It works on her phone, but when I pulled it up on my laptop, all the controls are messed up, and it’s mostly those weird .io games I don’t know how to play. I guess it’s fine for her, but it’s not what I’m looking for.

Today I found another link buried in a two year old Reddit comment thread. I’m typing this while it loads. No pop ups so far, the homepage looks clean. I’m gonna try Slope in a minute, see if it works. If it doesn’t, it’s not the end of the world. I’ll just grade those quizzes early, or go get a soda from the vending machine I now follow on Instagram. But it’d be really nice to get my little 10 minute brain break back.

If you’ve got one that actually works, leave a comment below. I’m not picky. Just no fake close buttons and no awkward full screen cheating dating ads, please. (Word count: 1128)
