I messed up my credit years ago and I have no clue how to fix it
Last Tuesday I stood in a leasing office on 3rd Street holding a folder with my pay stubs, a reference from my current landlord, and a half-spilled iced coffee that was seeping through the paper, and the lady behind the desk just blinked at her screen and said she couldn’t approve my application. Minimum credit score is 620, she said, and mine’s 580. I nodded and smiled and said no problem, that’s fine, I get it, and walked out to the bus stop. I sat there for 20 minutes waiting for my ride back to the suburbs, and I didn’t even cry, I just felt that same old heavy stupid feeling I get when this comes up.
I know how I got here. When I was 22, the little coffee shop I worked at downtown closed overnight. The owner just locked the doors and left town, left all of us without pay for two weeks and no job. I had a $1200 balance on a Capital One card I’d opened to buy a new laptop for my community college classes, and I couldn’t make the minimum payments after that. For three months I just ignored the letters and the calls, slept on a friend’s couch, picked up odd shifts washing dishes at a diner, and then eventually the whole thing got sold to a collections agency. I stopped opening any mail from unfamiliar addresses after that. That was six years ago. I’m 28 now, I have a stable admin job at a dentist’s office, I budget every month, I pay my rent on time, I have a little 401k going. But that old mistake is still glued to my report.
I finally worked up the nerve to pull my free credit report last week, printed it out at the library, spread it all over my kitchen table while I ate cold leftover pepperoni pizza, and stared at it for an hour. The collections account is now up to almost $1800 with all the fees and interest. And there’s a random 30-day late payment I don’t even recognize from Verizon, back in 2018. Oh right, my ex used my Social to get a phone when we lived together, because his credit was even worse than mine. I forgot all about that, and he never paid it on time that first month before we broke up. Great. Two marks dragging me down, and one of them isn’t even my mess.
I don’t know who to ask for help. I mentioned it to my mom when I called her for her birthday last weekend, and she just sighed and said “How could you be so careless with your credit? I taught you better than that.” So I dropped it. I didn’t tell her I was basically homeless for a month back then, that I was choosing between bus fare to get to work and paying a credit card bill. Doesn’t matter anyway, it happened. My roommate fixed her credit a couple years ago, but she paid one of those credit repair companies $120 a month for a year. I can’t swing that. My car needed new brakes last month, that ate my whole extra cash for the quarter, and I’m still saving up to replace my work boots that have a hole in the toe. And half the stuff I see online says those credit repair places are just scams anyway, that they do stuff you could do yourself for free. Cool. How?
I went down a Google rabbit hole last night, and it’s all either people trying to sell me a “credit repair kit” for $49 or people in comment sections going “Just pay off all your debt! That’s all you have to do!” Thanks, that’s super helpful. I don’t have $1800 just sitting around to throw at an old collections bill. I heard about this thing called pay for delete, where you pay half the balance and they take it off your report. But I’ve also read that it’s against some credit bureau rules, or that it doesn’t work, that they take your money and still leave the mark on there. I don’t have extra money to gamble on that.
It’s so stupid how this one mistake keeps messing up every big thing I try to do now. I can’t get a decent car loan—last month I went to the dealership looking for a used car that wouldn’t overheat on my commute, and the best rate they could give me was 18%. Eighteen percent. That adds three thousand dollars to the price of a five thousand dollar car. That’s my whole emergency fund. I just thanked the guy and walked out, my face hot the whole way to the bus stop. I keep telling myself it’s fine, I can wait, I can keep saving, but I’m so tired of waiting. I’m tired of commuting an hour and a half each way every day just because I can’t get approved for an apartment close to work. I’m tired of this being my big dirty secret, like I’m somehow a bad person because I messed up when I was 22 and had no one to bail me out.
I got that secured credit card last year, you know? The one where you put down $500 as collateral. I use it for gas every week, pay it off completely every Sunday, no exceptions. My score went up 40 points in a year and a half from that, just from doing that. But that old collections mark is still dragging me down 100 points, easy.
The thing is, I’m willing to do the work. I just don’t know what the work actually is. How do I dispute that wrong Verizon late fee? What do I even write in the dispute? Do I call the collections agency directly, or do I go through the credit bureaus? Am I going to get harassed if I reach out to them? I’m so scared of picking up the phone and getting yelled at for something that happened six years ago. I know I need help, I just don’t know where to get it that doesn’t cost a hundred bucks a month or judge me for messing up when I had nothing to fall back on. I’m just… tired of treading water waiting for this to fix itself, and it’s not going to fix itself. I just need a nudge in the right direction from someone who’s actually been here, not someone trying to sell me something.
