My biggest learning building in ed-tech wasn’t about the coolest algorithm, the slickest UI, or even the most engaging content. It was this fundamental, almost humbling realization:

Sounds simple, right? Maybe even obvious? But in the white-hot excitement of starting an ed-tech venture, it’s incredibly easy to forget. We get seduced by the shiny.
The Shiny Trap: When the Solution Becomes the Problem
Early on, I was laser-focused on the tech itself. We had this brilliant idea – let’s call it “Project Spark” – leveraging cutting-edge AI to personalize learning pathways. We spent months refining the engine, polishing the interface, obsessed with metrics like engagement time and quiz completion rates. We were building a Ferrari of adaptive learning. 2. Teachers are the Ultimate Design Partners (Not Just End Users): We shifted from seeing teachers as passive recipients to co-designers. Their insights were gold: “This workflow adds 5 steps to my morning routine,” “I need to see why the AI suggested this,” “I can’t use this if it doesn’t export data to our SIS.” Building with them, not just for them, transformed our products from intrusive gadgets into valuable tools. Their expertise in pedagogy and classroom reality is the irreplaceable core we amplify.
3. Pedagogy Drives Technology (Never the Reverse): Instead of asking, “What cool tech can we build?” we started asking, “What meaningful learning challenge can we help overcome?” and then explored if/how tech could effectively support that pedagogical goal. 5. Data Privacy Isn’t a Feature; It’s the Foundation: Especially when building for minors, trust is paramount. Every design decision must be filtered through a lens of security and ethical data use. “Move fast and break things” is a toxic mantra in ed-tech. Building responsibly is building sustainably. One major privacy misstep can destroy years of goodwill and potential.
Building Amplifiers, Not Disruptors
This learning fundamentally changed our approach. Now, every feature brainstorm starts with questions rooted in amplification:
“How will this enhance the teacher’s existing practice?” (Will it save them time? Provide deeper insights? Simplify a complex task?)
“How will this deepen the student’s learning experience?” (Will it make concepts clearer? Offer safer practice? Connect learning to their world?)
“How does this fit into the messy, beautiful reality of a school day?” (Is it simple to start? Resilient to spotty wifi? Respectful of limited time?)
“Does this solve a problem educators actually feel?” (Or just one we imagine they have?)
We build amplifiers. Tools that make the hard work of teaching a little easier, the path to understanding a little clearer, the connection between learner and content a little stronger. Sometimes that means sophisticated AI under the hood. Often, it means incredibly thoughtful design, seamless integration, and relentless focus on user experience.
The Ongoing Journey
This isn’t a lesson learned once and checked off. It’s a daily practice. The seduction of the shiny is always there. New technologies emerge, promising revolution. But building meaningful, lasting impact in ed-tech demands that we constantly ground ourselves in the messy, human reality of learning environments.
The most powerful ed-tech isn’t the most technologically complex; it’s the most thoughtfully integrated. It understands that it plays a supporting role in the grand, complex, and profoundly human endeavor of education. Our job isn’t to disrupt that; it’s to amplify its potential. That’s the learning that shapes everything I build now. It’s less about building the future and more about thoughtfully empowering the incredible work already happening every day in classrooms everywhere.
