Am I Wrong for Not Inviting My Mom to My Wedding? A Teacher’s Reflection on Family Boundaries

The question came on a Tuesday afternoon, right after the last bell. Sarah, a colleague of mine, stood in my classroom doorway holding a stack of essays and a look I knew well—the one that means “I need someone to tell me I’m not crazy.”

“Can I ask you something?” she said. “And please be honest.”

I put down my pen. “Sure.”

“Am I wrong for not inviting my mom to my wedding?”

She hadn’t planned to ask me that. It just slipped out, the way heavy things do when you’ve been carrying them quietly for too long. We stood there for a minute while she explained. Her mother lives forty minutes away. They talk maybe twice a month, mostly short conversations where Sarah listens to her mother’s opinions about her job, her hair, her fiancé, and the fact that she’s “still not a real teacher” because she only works part-time at the community center.

When Sarah first got engaged, she tried to include her mother. She brought her dress shopping. Her mother spent the whole appointment telling the saleswoman that Sarah would never fit into a sample size, that they should just order something larger now and “save everyone the embarrassment.” At the venue tasting, she complained about the food before she even tried it. When Sarah and her fiancé decided to have a small ceremony with just close friends, her mother called it “a pathetic excuse for a wedding” and said she’d “forgive them eventually.”

So Sarah made the call. No invitation. And now she was standing in my doorway, asking if she was the villain.

I told her I couldn’t answer for her. But I could tell her what I’ve learned from twenty years of working with families—both in my classroom and in my own living room.

When a child sets a boundary with a parent, it’s rarely a sudden decision. End of content.
