Why Do Kids Forget Everything by Friday? A Closer Look at the Banking Model of Education
Last Tuesday, my daughter sat across from me with a study guide full of dates about colonial America. She had underlined everything in yellow. The sheet was so bright it looked radioactive. I asked her, “Okay, what was the Boston Tea Party about?” She answered exactly what the worksheet said: “A protest against the Tea Act.” I nodded. Then I asked, “But why would a tax on tea make people toss crates into the water?” She blinked. “I don’t know. It’s just what happened.”
That moment stuck with me. It wasn’t that she hadn’t done the work. She had. She memorized the names, the dates, the key terms. She could pull them out like index cards from a box. But there was no connection in her mind between the facts and the humans behind them. There was no question about why a group of people would take that kind of risk. She had deposited the information into her brain like coins into a jar, and she could count it out when the test came. Whether it would still be there next week? Probably not.
There’s a term for what I saw. Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator, called it the “banking concept of education.” The idea is simple: students are treated like empty accounts, and the teacher’s job is to make deposits. The child’s job is to receive, file, and store. The teacher chooses the material, hands it over, and later checks to see if the student can give it back. No one expects the student to do much with it. In fact, doing something with it can get in the way.
I recognize this because I’ve done it. I’ve been the teacher standing at the front of the room with a slide deck, feeding information to a row of glazed-over faces. I’ve given grammar notes on Monday and a quiz on Friday. The students passed. Then two weeks later, I’d read their essays and find the same comma mistakes we’d “covered.” I used to get frustrated. But now I wonder if the problem wasn’t their memory. The problem was that they had learned to treat grammar like a separate subject, not something they actually use.
My hypothesis is this: when children are asked to play a passive role in learning, they become passive thinkers. Not because they lack curiosity, but because the system rewards them for not thinking. If you want a good grade, you don’t question the material. You don’t connect it to your own life. You don’t ask why it matters. You just memorize the dates, return them, and wait for the next deposit.
I started testing this idea in my own classroom. Instead of presenting five comma rules on the board, I gave students a paragraph with no punctuation and asked, “Where does this get confusing? What would you add to make it readable?” They looked at me like I’d forgotten the lesson plan. A few kids raised their hands to ask, “But which rule is it?” I told them to read the sentence out loud and listen to where their voice paused. It was messy. Some of them still wanted me to just give them the answer. But by the end of the activity, they were arguing about whether a comma belonged there because of how it sounded, not because the worksheet said so.
The same shift can happen at home. When my daughter was studying for that history test, I could have helped her memorize the facts faster. I could have made flashcards. But what she needed was someone to ask her a different kind of question. Not “What happened?” but “Why would someone do that?” Not “What was the result?” but “How would you have reacted?” Those questions don’t have a single correct answer. That’s what makes them uncomfortable. But they’re also the questions that make a fact stick.
Parents can do this without being experts in the subject. When your child comes home with a worksheet about the water cycle, it’s tempting to help them fill in the blanks. But try setting the worksheet aside for a minute. Ask, “If clouds are made of water, why don’t they just fall down?” Let them fumble through an explanation. If they get it wrong, that’s okay. The struggle is where the learning happens. The worksheet just checks whether they can repeat a sentence.
I’ve started paying attention to the difference between “teaching” and “telling.” Telling is faster. When my daughter says, “I don’t get it,” my first instinct is to explain the whole thing in a neat little package. That works for getting homework done before dinner. It works for the next day’s quiz. But it doesn’t work for long-term understanding. So now I try to catch myself. I say, “Okay, what part doesn’t make sense?” Or I ask her to show me what she’s already figured out. It takes longer. Sometimes she gets frustrated. But once in a while, I see her make a connection she didn’t have before, and those are the moments that stay.
The banking model is hard to escape. It’s built into the way we grade, the way we schedule class periods, the way we pile up standards. Kids are sorted by how well they can store and repeat information. It’s quiet and efficient. It’s also deceptively hollow. When the material is something a child cares about, the banking model falls apart. They ask questions, they make mistakes, they try again. You can’t just deposit facts into a person who is already busy thinking their own thoughts.
That’s what I tell other parents when they worry their kids are falling behind. It’s not always about how much the child can memorize. It’s about whether the child trusts that their own thinking is welcome. A kid who knows they can ask “why” or challenge what they’re told will keep learning long after the test is over. A kid who just stores facts? They’ll forget them by Friday.
I don’t have a perfect system. My daughter still has to memorize state capitals. I still fall back into explaining things when I’m tired. There are nights when homework just needs to get done, and I don’t have the energy to turn every worksheet into a conversation. But I’ve started paying attention. When she gives me a correct answer too quickly, I pause. I ask one more question. Sometimes she rolls her eyes. Sometimes she shrugs. But not always. Once in a while, she asks me a question back, and I know the deposit hasn’t been made. Something is actually moving in her mind. That’s not a fact you can grade. But it’s the thing I’m most interested in.
