She told me about a problem where she had to explain her reasoning in words—which was new and awkward for her. We talked about whether that was annoying or kind of satisfying. She said it was both.

But I haven’t turned into a cheerleader. There are times when she’s exhausted, days when she says she wants to go back to the regular class, and we talk about that without panic. For now, she stays. For now, it works.

The other thing I realized is that asking to take a harder class—or not taking one—doesn’t define your worth. It’s just a decision about how to spend your time for one semester. Maya happens to like the challenge. Another kid might not, and that’s fine too. The important part is that she made the choice herself, with a little guidance, and she knows she can change her mind.

I still don’t know if she’ll stick with it all year. There might be a rough patch in February, or she might decide she’d rather have more free time than extra rigor. But that’s okay. She’s learning how to make those calls, and I’m learning how to let her. That’s probably the real class we’re both in.
