What Happens When Kids Spend Their Mornings with AI Tutors: A Parent’s Honest First Look
I sat on a low stool in the back of a bright room at Alpha School in Austin, watching a group of kids work through reading and math problems on laptops. The room was quieter than my own middle school classroom, but not silent. A boy near the window whispered the words on his screen back to himself. Another girl had her hand up, not for a teacher, but for a parent volunteer who was circulating with a clipboard. The actual teacher—the school calls them guides—was kneeling beside a student, pointing at something on the screen and talking in a low voice.
I came in skeptical. I’ve taught middle school for eleven years, and I have a son who doesn’t like asking for help. The idea of replacing direct instruction with an AI app felt like another tech company answer to a problem that wasn’t just about delivery. But a friend at school pickup mentioned that Alpha offers trial days, and I signed our son up. Not because we were ready to leave our current school, but because I wanted to see what a school that puts a computer at the center of learning actually looks like.
The academic block runs for two hours each morning. There is no teacher at the front of the room. No one says “Okay, everyone open to page forty-two.” Instead, each student logs into a program that adapts as they go. If they answer quickly and correctly, the questions get harder. If they make a mistake, the system either slows down or gives a short re-teaching video. The guide moves through the space, checking a tablet that shows where each student is stuck. At one point, a guide named Megan knelt down near our son and said, “You’ve been on this one for about six minutes. Do you want to read it out loud or should I ask the program to say it slower?”
He chose to read it out loud. She sat with him through the next two steps. Then she left him to continue.
I noticed that whenever a student had a question, they didn’t raise their hand immediately. They clicked a “help” button on the screen, and the program tried to rephrase the problem. If they were still stuck, a guide would get an alert and come over. At first I thought this would mean more waiting. But it meant less. Kids didn’t have to sit there with a hand in the air while a teacher was already busy helping six other kids. The software was doing the first round of support, and the adult was doing the second.
That was also what made me uncomfortable.
My son came out at lunchtime with a sticker on his shirt that said “I survived the 8:30 challenge” and a slightly blank look on his face. When I asked what he thought, he said, “It was okay. The computer teaches you, and then the teacher comes if you need her. But she wasn’t really teaching.” He said this matter-of-factly, not upset. He just knew something different had happened.
That’s the shift, I think. In a regular classroom, the teacher presents the lesson, then checks for understanding. At Alpha, the software presents the lesson, and the adult checks for confusion. The role of the human changed from “the person who knows the content” to “the person who helps you when you’re stuck.” That isn’t necessarily worse. But it is a different kind of relationship to learning, and it’s worth being honest about what that means for students who need a warm, consistent adult to help them stay committed to a hard task. I don’t know how the guide builds that relationship when they’re managing twenty students all doing different things.
The afternoon at Alpha is different from the morning. The students shift into project work—small groups building something practical, like a budget for a class event or a simple business plan. There was a cardboard structure in one corner and a Google Slides presentation on another screen. Students were talking more. Some were laughing. This was where the social learning happened, and it looked genuinely engaging. But if you only visited during the academic block, you would think school had become a quiet, individual activity.
Our son didn’t necessarily care about the two hours of math. What he talked about on the drive home was the project: he and three other kids had designed a snack stand menu with pricing and a profit estimate. He came home wanting to calculate the cost of ingredients at the grocery store. That’s what sold me a little, even though I still had questions about screen time and the role of the guide.
The thing that challenged me the most was the feedback loop. When our son does math homework at our kitchen table, I am the adaptive software. I see his hesitation. I rephrase the question. I ask him to try again. At Alpha, the AI does that instant, patient responding, and the teacher only jumps in when the machine runs out of ways to help. It made me realize how much of my own “teaching” at home is just repeating the same question in a louder voice. The program can’t be nice or annoyed or tired, which is sometimes a relief for a kid who feels watched.
Since that visit, I’ve tried one small change with homework. Instead of asking, “Do you need help?” I wait until my son looks up and ask, “Where are you stuck?” If he can’t point to a specific step, he has to read the problem aloud one more time. Usually, that’s enough. It’s a tiny trick, but it gave me the same effect the “help” button does: it asks the student to name the problem before someone else jumps in.
I still have questions about whether Alpha’s model works for every kind of learner. The two-hour academic block relies on the ability to sit with headphones on and keep going, even with movement breaks. Some kids thrive on that. Others need a teacher to catch them falling off before they even notice. And the school isn’t accessible to most families; that cost alone makes it a privilege, not a movement.
What the trial day gave me wasn’t an answer. It gave me a clearer way to watch my son struggle. At his current school, he sometimes says “I don’t get it” and gives up before we know what part he doesn’t understand. I used to step in and explain the whole lesson again. Now I’m more likely to say, “Show me exactly what you were doing before you got stuck,” and I let him mess with the problem a little longer before I rescue him.
He still doesn’t ask for help as often as he should. We’re working on that. But the conversation about Alpha opened something up, and I’m not sure we would have had it without a school that made me sit in the back of a quiet room and watch a computer do part of my job.
