Why Does It Seem Like Kids Have to Learn Things Before School Teaches Them?
Last Tuesday, my daughter slammed her pencil down on the kitchen table. She was working on a fractions worksheet, the kind where you have to compare 3/4 and 2/3 without drawing a picture. She’d been quiet for about five minutes, and then the pencil hit the wood.
“This doesn’t make sense,” she said. “Why do I have to know multiplication facts before Ms. Alvarez even teaches us fractions? Isn’t it her job to teach us? Why do we have to already know stuff if we’re coming to school to learn it?”
I didn’t have a quick answer. It sounded like a reasonable question. It also sounded a little like an excuse, but I knew better. She was genuinely confused. And buried under her frustration was something a lot of kids feel but can’t put into words: School keeps asking them to know things before being taught those things. And that seems backwards.
But the more I thought about it, the more I realized her question was worth taking seriously.
Schools really do teach. A teacher stands in front of a class and explains, demonstrates, asks questions, corrects mistakes. That part is real. But teaching isn’t broadcasting. You can’t just send information out into the air and expect every kid to catch it. The brain needs something to attach the new idea to. Otherwise, it’s like trying to hang a picture on a wall with no hook. You can nail into drywall all day, but it won’t hold.
That’s why teachers assign “pre-work” or ask kids to read a chapter before the lesson. They’re not trying to make the kids teach themselves. They’re trying to make sure the lesson has somewhere to land.
I remember this from my own time teaching sixth grade. We’d start a unit on ancient Rome, and some kids already knew about gladiators, Caesar, the Colosseum. Others had never heard any of it. Same lesson, same teacher, completely different experience. The kids with background knowledge weren’t smarter. They just had hooks. When I mentioned the Senate, they had a vague image in their head. For the other kids, the word “Senate” might as well have been from another language.
That’s the real reason behind the prep. It’s not about learning the material perfectly before a teacher explains it. It’s about building enough familiarity that the explanation doesn’t bounce off.
But my daughter didn’t need a lecture about cognitive science. She needed an answer to her question. So after a pause, I asked her one back.
“What part of this do you already understand?”
She thought about it. “I know what multiplication is. But I don’t get how it helps with fractions.”
That was honest. We spent a few minutes looking at how a denominator splits a whole into pieces, and how comparing fractions is really about comparing the size of those pieces. I wasn’t giving her a full lesson. She’d already had one in class. But what we were doing was the part she’d been missing: connecting what she already knew to what her teacher had been trying to teach.
That connection is the hidden work of learning. And it doesn’t happen automatically.
Teachers know this. That’s why you’ll see them send home a list of vocabulary words before a science unit, or ask kids to skim a history chapter before the discussion. They’re not outsourcing their job to parents. They’re trying to build a little bit of scaffolding so the actual teaching can stick. If every word on a page is unfamiliar, a kid spends all their energy just decoding the text. There’s no mental room left to understand it.
This is also why kids sometimes say, “I read the chapter, but I didn’t understand it.” They read the words. But they didn’t have enough background to decode the meaning. And reading something once without understanding is discouraging. No wonder they think they’re bad at school.
The next morning, I had a chance to talk to Ms. Alvarez briefly at drop-off. I didn’t want to complain. I just wanted to understand the logic behind the homework. She explained that the fractions unit builds on multiplication and division. Some kids needed extra review, so she sent home the practice sheets before the unit started.
“I want them to come in knowing their times tables cold,” she said. “If they’re still counting on their fingers, they won’t be able to follow the actual fraction lesson.”
That made sense. She wasn’t asking my daughter to learn fractions before she was taught fractions. She was asking her to bring the tools she already had, and polish them a little, so that when the teacher showed her how to use those tools for something new, she could actually follow along.
That’s a lot easier to explain when you put it in those terms. And later, when my daughter complained about another worksheet, I tried a different response.
“That’s a fair question,” I said. “Here’s what the pre-work is for. When you go into class tomorrow, you’ll know enough to know what you don’t know. That’s not the same as knowing it. But it means the lesson won’t go over your head.”
She gave me a look. ‘So I have to do extra work just to know what I don’t know?”
“Kind of,” I said. “But think of it this way. If you already knew everything at the start, what would you need the teacher for?”
She didn’t have an answer to that. But she picked the pencil back up.
I’m not saying this solved the homework problem forever. There are still grumbles. There are still afternoons when a simple assignment feels like a brick wall. And I don’t pretend to have a perfect way to explain every assignment that comes home.
But I’ve stopped saying, “Just do it, it’s for school.” Instead, I’ve started asking a different question: “What did your teacher ask you to look at before class?” That question alone has helped us skip past some of the frustration.
If your child asks why they have to learn things before school teaches them, it’s okay to say, “That’s a fair question.” Because it is. Then you can say, “The lesson is the main meal. But you have to have a plate on the table first. The pre-work is the plate.” It’s not a perfect analogy, but it works.
You don’t need to become a homework coach or turn your kitchen into a second classroom. Sometimes just spending a few minutes previewing a title, scanning a couple of headings, or watching a short video about a topic before the unit starts makes the difference. Five minutes, not an hour. The goal isn’t mastery. It’s recognition. If a child encounters a word twice, once at home and once in class, the second time feels far less scary.
I still don’t love seeing my daughter frustrated by work that’s supposed to prepare her for more work. It feels unfair, even when I know it isn’t. But I’m starting to understand that school isn’t just about learning new things. It’s also about learning how to come ready to learn them. That’s a skill itself. And nobody teaches it all at once.
