What Educators Are Actually Telling Students About Their Future With AI Advancements
Last month I spent a day shadowing my 11th grader for his high school’s parent visitation week, and ended up squeezed into a back row of his 12-student advisory period, inhaling the smell of microwave popcorn and dried-up dry erase marker. Halfway through the period, advisory teacher Ms. Lopez asked everyone to share one thing they’re stressed about when it comes to life after graduation.
Javi, the kid across the table, said he wants to study game design, but he’s been second-guessing it nonstop. “AI can crank out concept art and level layouts faster than I can draw them by hand,” he said. “What’s the point of spending four years learning to do something a robot can do in 10 minutes?” Half the room nodded. My own kid slouched lower in his chair, because he’s been saying the same thing to me at dinner for months.
Ms. Lopez didn’t launch into a rah-rah motivational speech. She just leaned against the desk, crossed her arms, and said, “That’s a fair question. Let me answer it with something I ask all of you: when you drew that character last week, what did you want it to have that AI didn’t give you?” Javi thought for a second, then said he’d put a thin scar on the character’s left cheek, same as the one he got falling off his bike when he was 10. The character’s whole backstory is about feeling out of place after an injury, and every AI he tried put the scar on the right, or made it too big and dramatic, like it was just for show. It never got that it was a small, quiet thing that only mattered to him. Ms. Lopez nodded and said, “That’s your job. That’s the part AI can’t do. It can make the thing, but it can’t want the thing the way you do.”
After the period, I ended up talking to three different teachers over lukewarm coffee in the teacher’s lounge that day, because I was curious what they’re actually telling kids these days, versus all the hot takes I scroll past on my feed. Turns out the advice is pretty consistent, and it’s not what I expected. It’s not “learn to prompt AI and you’ll be set” and it’s not “AI is going to take all your jobs so pick a trade no robot can touch.” It’s small, specific shifts in what kids prioritize.
The first thing every teacher mentioned is that they tell kids to stop leading with their technical skill of making something, and start leading with the question they want to answer. The AP Bio teacher, Ms. Henderson, said she hears kids say all the time that AI can write lab reports and run statistical analysis, so why learn the stats yourself. She tells them AI can’t tell you that your data was off because you spilled half your agar solution and were running late to soccer practice, or that you’re curious about a weird side result no one else has bothered to look into. That’s the question only you can bring. For parents, what that looks like at home isn’t banning AI from homework, it’s changing the question you ask when your kid shows you a finished project. Instead of asking “did you use AI to do this?” ask “what’s one thing AI got wrong that you had to change?” It’s a small shift, takes 10 seconds, but it trains kids to stop letting AI do the thinking for them, and start using it as a tool instead of a replacement.
The second thing teachers emphasize is that kids need to build small, daily habits that strengthen their own judgment, not just their ability to crank out output. My kid’s English teacher, Mr. Torres, told me he assigns 10 minutes of ungraded, unedited free writing every day, about anything the kid wants. Not because essays are going out of style, but because the habit of sorting out your own opinion on paper is something AI can’t mimic. When you have to argue for a promotion, or work out a disagreement with a teammate, or pitch an idea to a client, you can’t feed all the context to AI and read off its answer. You have to know what you think. For parents, that’s easy to practice at home without adding more work: when your kid uses AI for a homework assignment, just ask them to show you one sentence or idea that AI didn’t include. It takes half a minute, and it reminds them that their perspective is the whole point.
After coffee, I drove home with my kid, and we stopped for tacos at the greasy place by the school. He got crumbs all over the passenger seat like he always does, and said, “Ms. Lopez said most jobs 10 years from now are gonna be 80% AI output anyway. The people who get hired and keep their jobs are the ones who have the other 20%.”
Last week, I walked past his room when he was working on his college application essay. He’d pulled a draft from AI based on the notes he had about his volunteer work at the local animal shelter, and the draft was fine—generic, polished, the kind of thing that sounds good but doesn’t stick. He’d crossed out three full paragraphs, and written in his messy scrawl in the margins about staying late two weeks before Christmas to sit with a 10-year-old pit bull that no one wanted to meet because he had anxiety and growled at strangers. He wrote that the dog fell asleep on his shoes, and that’s when he decided he wanted to do marketing for small non-profit animal shelters, to help the dogs no one notices get seen. I leaned against the doorframe for a minute, didn’t say anything.
I still don’t know what my kid’s future will look like. No one does, not even the teachers. But this advice makes more sense than the panic I see everywhere, that either AI will fix everything or it will take everything. It’s just… figure out what you care enough about to add your own 20%. That’s enough, for now.
