Why We Remember Some Teachers (And Forget Others): What Neuroscience Says About Emotion and Learning
I waited in the middle school car line last week, picking up my 13-year-old Lila, peeling a crumpled price sticker off the new water bottle I’d bought her that morning. She hauled her backpack into the backseat, dropped a half-eaten peanut butter granola bar on the floor mat, and said, out of nowhere, “I can’t remember a single thing my 6th grade math teacher taught me. But I can tell you exactly what Ms. Henderson said about glacier melt yesterday.”
I laughed at first, but it stuck with me. I started running through my own high school teachers, and she’s right. I can’t name the unit my 10th grade chemistry lecturer was covering the day I skipped study hall to get a milkshake with my friend, but I can still feel the warmth of Mr. Torres’ classroom after my grandma died my junior year. I’d shown up to AP Bio red-eyed, trying to hide in the back, and he stopped mid-lecture on cell division, brought me a granola bar from his desk drawer, and told me I didn’t have to take notes that day. I don’t remember what we were supposed to learn that period, but I still remember how to map a Punnett square, and I still get a little warm when I think about him.
A few months back, I read a neuroscience study that explained why this happens. Researchers found that the amygdala, the part of our brain that handles emotion, acts like a filter for what we store long-term. Our brains don’t have room to keep every boring lecture, every disconnected homework problem, every neutral fact we’re handed. Only information tied to even a mild emotional event gets flagged as important and saved. That’s the core of it: emotion isn’t a distraction from learning. It’s the thing that makes learning stick.
I volunteered in my niece’s 4th grade class last spring, and I saw this play out in real time. Her teacher, Ms. Rao, starts every morning with 10 minutes of “high low” – each kid gets a turn to share the best and worst thing from their weekend, before anyone pulls out a math book. I remember thinking, that’s 10 minutes they could be doing multiplication drills. We’re already so behind on testing benchmarks, why waste time talking about a kid’s lost hamster? But by the end of the hour, I noticed something. The kid who never turned in homework, who spent most of his time drawing rockets under his desk, it was his turn to share. He talked for three minutes about the camping trip he took with his dad, who lives out of state. For the rest of the morning, he raised his hand three times to answer questions. He turned in his math worksheet, done all the way through.
It’s easy to misread this as saying we need to make every lesson a big, exciting, emotional production, or that we have to be friends with every kid to be a good teacher. But that’s not it. The emotion doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be present. Last year, when Lila was struggling with fractions, her tutor spent three weeks re-explaining the same concepts over and over, and Lila just got more tense, more quiet, every session. One week, Lila showed up still stinging from her soccer team losing the city playoff that morning. Instead of jumping straight into equivalent fractions, the tutor said, “That sounds awful. Tell me what happened at the end of the game.” Lila talked for five minutes, cried a little, wiped her eyes on her sleeve, and then when they went back to fractions, she got it on the second try.
The practical part of this is far simpler than most people make it sound. You don’t have to rewrite your entire curriculum or rearrange your nightly homework routine to make it work. If you’re a teacher or a parent helping with homework, when a kid comes to the table upset, pause for 90 seconds first. Let them say what’s wrong, and acknowledge it out loud: “That sounds really frustrating” or “I’d be upset too.” You don’t have to fix it right then. Just naming the emotion tells the brain it’s safe to move on to learning.
Another small, low-effort shift: tie a tiny personal connection to whatever you’re talking about. If you’re teaching about the water cycle, mention that you got caught in a random thunderstorm on your walk to work that morning. If you’re helping with a history paper on the civil rights movement, mention that your grandma told you about marching when she was 16. It doesn’t add more than 30 seconds to the lesson, but it tacks a small emotional anchor to the fact, so it sticks. Even just sharing one silly, small thing about your day – like how your dog ate your breakfast this morning – builds enough safety that the brain opens up to learning.
This also explains why we forget so many perfectly fine teachers. They weren’t bad, they just stuck to the lesson plan, never deviated, never asked how you were doing, never shared anything personal. All the content was neutral, so the brain just filters it out. On the flip side, bad emotion sticks too – I still remember the 4th grade teacher who embarrassed me for misreading a word out loud in front of the whole class, and I avoided reading aloud for 10 years after that. The emotion always tags the learning, for better or worse.
Last week, I quizzed Lila for her science test on climate change, and she stopped in the middle of going over carbon levels to retell the story Ms. Henderson told about hiking to a glacier when she was Lila’s age, and how her grandma pointed out the same glacier had retreated a whole mile since she was a kid. Ms. Henderson didn’t have to add that story to the lesson plan. It wasn’t on the test. But Lila got an A on the test, and I’d bet she’ll remember that story, and what she learned about glaciers, 30 years from now. I still catch myself jumping straight to fixing Lila’s homework mistakes before I ask how her day was. I’m still working on pausing, on leaving those two or three minutes at the start for the messy, non-academic stuff that doesn’t fit in the grade book. It doesn’t make lesson plans go smoother, or homework go faster. But it makes the learning stick.
