Is AI Helping My Child Learn Or Avoid Learning? A Middle School Teacher Breaks It Down
Last Tuesday after school, I was stacking leftover exit tickets by the copy machine in my 7th grade ELA classroom, the air still smelling like cheddar Goldfish and dry erase marker, when Mia hung back by the door, twisting the drawstring of her neon pink hoodie. Everyone else had left for cross country practice and robotics club, but she kept shifting her weight, like she had something she needed to get off her chest. When she walked over, she flipped her laptop around to show me a half-written personal narrative, the prompt at the top: Write about a time you felt like a failure.
The whole first paragraph was generic, nothing like Mia’s usual voice, which is full of bad jokes and asides about her rescue beagle, Max. I looked up at her, and she blurted out that she’d typed the prompt into AI to see what would come out, and now she had a whole essay, but it wasn’t hers. She was scared I’d give her a zero for cheating.
That moment got me thinking, because I’ve had half a dozen versions of this conversation in the last three months. Last month, Javi turned in a book report on The Giver that had lines about “dystopian societal commentary” that no 7th grader I’ve ever taught would use unprompted. When I pulled him aside after class, he admitted he’d generated the whole thing the morning it was due, after three straight days of soccer games and a last-minute algebra test. He couldn’t even tell me what the main argument of his own essay was when I asked.
So that’s the question every parent and teacher I know is asking right now: is this stuff actually helping kids learn, or is it just an easy way to skip all the hard parts?
I sat down with Mia next to the copy machine, and I asked her what she actually wanted to write about. She rolled her eyes and said she’d been trying to write about that time she trained Max for the school’s dog agility show, and he kept running off the course to steal hot dogs from the picnic table, and she cried after because she thought he didn’t trust her. She just couldn’t figure out how to start, or how to order the story so it made sense. The AI had written about failing a math test, which was boring and not her at all.
We pulled up the AI outline together, and I asked her to cross out every part that didn’t fit her story, and write in her own details. The AI had a good structure: open with the panic right before the show, explain why it mattered so much to her, tell the story of the hot dog incident, end with what she learned about patience with her dog. Mia filled in every sentence from her own memory, and by the time she left to catch her bus, she had a first draft that felt like her. She told me she never would have even gotten that far if she’d sat staring at a blank screen for another hour. That’s AI helping, not cheating. She was stuck, she used a tool to get unblocked, and she still did all the hard work of telling her own story and practicing her writing.
The problem isn’t AI, it’s when kids use it to skip the part of the assignment that actually builds the skill. Javi wasn’t stuck on outlining his book report—he just skipped the entire process of reading the book closely, thinking through what he thought about it, and putting that into words. That’s the whole point of the assignment, and he skipped it.
I’ve gotten so many panicked emails from parents lately, saying they caught their kid using AI, they took their phone away, and now there’s a huge fight at the dinner table every night. I tell them the same thing I tell my students: banning AI isn’t the answer. It’s here, it’s not going away, just like calculators were when our parents were in school. Everyone panicked that calculators would make kids bad at math, but now we just teach them when to practice the skill on their own, and when to use the tool to save time.
The small, concrete changes I tell parents to try at home work way better than a full ban. First, instead of yelling or punishing when you find AI on their homework, sit down and ask three simple questions: What part of this assignment were you stuck on? What parts did you already do on your own? What exactly did you ask AI to do? Nine times out of ten, they’re not trying to cheat—they’re just stuck and don’t want to ask for help at 9pm when they’re tired.
Second, set clear rules based on the skill they’re building, not a blanket ban. If their assignment is to practice multiplying fractions, using AI to get all the answers is off limits, but it’s totally fine for AI to walk them through a tricky example they can’t figure out. If they’re supposed to practice writing five paragraph essays, AI can’t write the whole thing, but it can help them make an outline if they’re stuck staring at a blank page.
Third, just keep screens visible when they’re doing homework at the kitchen table. You don’t have to hover over their shoulder the whole time, just have a rule that laptops stay open and face the room, not flipped away so no one can see. It’s a small adjustment that encourages kids to be intentional about how they use AI, instead of hiding it.
Last week, Mia read her finished essay about Max and the hot dog out loud to the class, and everyone laughed when she got to the part where he ran off with a bratwurst in his mouth. After class, three other kids came up to me and said they also use AI to get unstuck when they’re blocked, they just didn’t tell anyone because they were scared of getting in trouble.
We added a new small rule to my classroom this month: any time you use AI for any part of an assignment, just jot down what you used it for on a sticky note at the top of the paper. It’s too new to have all the answers right now. Some kids still use it to skip work, and some kids are using it to do work they never would have had the confidence to try on their own. I don’t have a neat, perfect answer to the question everyone asks. I just know that pretending it doesn’t exist doesn’t help anyone. What helps is teaching kids to be honest about how they use it, and helping them tell the difference between using a tool to learn, and letting the tool do all your learning for you.
