That was my second year teaching, and I remember staring across the room and thinking, how am I supposed to be in two places at once? One kid finished 10 minutes early, one can’t get past the first problem, everyone else is scattered somewhere in between. Back then I tried rushing from one to the other, ended up snapping at Mia for waving her hand too much and making Javi feel even more stupid for needing so much help. That year taught me that balancing different learning speeds isn’t about pulling kids out of class or forcing everyone to keep up with the fastest kid. For kids who blow through all three sets, like Mia, I don’t just hand them a fourth stack of more multiplication problems. That’s just busy work that makes kids hate learning. I keep two plastic bins by the reading corner labeled “Fun Extra Challenges” that any kid can use anytime they’re done. One has logic puzzles, number scavenger hunts, and little math games they can play with a friend who’s also done. The other has low-prep project prompts: if we’re working on multiplication, a prompt might say “Calculate how many gallons of water your family uses in a week, if everyone showers 10 minutes a day” or “Design a playground that fits 100 kids, with a 200 square foot budget for mulch.” Mia spent a week designing her playground the year she was in my class, and ended up presenting it to the whole class at the end of the unit. That’s way more engaging than 20 extra multiplication problems.

For kids like Javi, I stopped expecting everyone to finish all three sets in one day. If he only gets through the first set in our 45 minute math block, he picks right back up there the next day. I don’t mark incomplete work as wrong on his report card, I just note that he’s mastered the skill when he actually gets it, even if it took three days instead of one. When I met Javi’s mom for conferences that fall, she told me she’d been panicking because he never brought home a finished worksheet, unlike her older kid who finished everything in a day. I pulled out his work folder and showed her that he’d gotten every problem right on the first set by the end of the week, he just needed more time to work through each step without rushing. It’s not all perfect, of course. Last month, the district mandated we wrap up multiplication and move to division two weeks earlier than I planned, because of state testing prep. Javi was still working through his first set of the harder problems, so I didn’t make him stay behind while the rest of the class moved on. Instead, I added one 3-problem half sheet of multiplication practice to his morning work every day, and we did a 2 minute check-in together after attendance. He got there in 10 days, and never missed a whole-group intro to division, so he didn’t feel like he was “bad at math” or left out of the new stuff.

A lot of new teachers and parents think you have to split kids into permanent fixed groups, skip a grade, or hold a kid back to fix mismatched learning speeds. But small, flexible adjustments work far better for most kids. For parents at home, if your kid is taking longer to finish their work than the teacher expects, don’t force them to cram it all into one night. Split it into two 10-minute chunks over two days, just like we do in class. If your kid is finishing fast, don’t just print more worksheets of the same thing. Give them a small real-world project related to what they’re learning—it takes way less prep on your end than you think.

This year, I have a new kid who reads four grades above his level but still struggles to add two-digit numbers without counting on his fingers. I’m still adjusting the check-ins, the problem sets, the challenge bins to fit him. There’s no perfect fix that works for every kid, every year. You just show up, notice where each kid is that day, and tweak what you’re doing until it fits a little better. That’s all any of us can do.
