Novatr vs Kaarwan BIM Courses: Honest Review For Families Deciding On Civil/MEP Training
It’s 8:15 PM at my kitchen table, the remains of a pepperoni pizza sit in a half-open box, my coffee’s gone lukewarm, and my 21-year-old son Arjun’s laptop has 12 open tabs, all comparing Novatr and Kaarwan BIM courses. He’s a third-year civil engineering student, just got back from his internship where he spent two months doing basic BIM drafting, and he’s dead set on adding a certified BIM course to his resume before he graduates next year. Two of his classmates swore by Kaarwan, a senior he connected with on LinkedIn recommended Novatr, and the deposit for either was due in three days. We’d spent two hours scrolling through testimonials, and we still didn’t have an answer.
Instead of guessing, we decided to do the unglamorous work: we signed up for both free webinars, Arjun did the free trial modules for each, and I messaged four recent graduates (two from each program, one Civil and one MEP each) on LinkedIn, offering to buy them a coffee in exchange for 10 minutes of honest feedback. All four replied, and what we learned was way different from what the ads promised.
First up was Kaarwan. Their free webinar was held on a Tuesday evening, and the instructor was a working BIM coordinator with 8 years of on-site experience. He didn’t rush through questions, answered every silly one Arjun threw at him—like whether we needed to buy an expensive Revit license upfront, or if they provided a student version. Turned out they do include the license, which was a big relief. Price-wise, Kaarwan’s full Civil course comes in around 45,000 rupees, runs 3 months, and meets two hours a day on weekdays, which fit perfectly around Arjun’s college class schedule.
But there are clear downsides. When I talked to Rahul, a 2022 graduate who took Kaarwan’s Civil course, he said all the practice projects are pre-made sample files, not real work from actual construction firms. The placement team got him three interviews, but all were for entry-level drafting roles that paid 2.5 to 3 LPA, barely more than entry-level construction jobs that don’t require any BIM certification. For MEP, Nida, who took Kaarwan’s MEP course last year, said the curriculum only touches on basic modeling, and skips most of the coordination and clash detection work that 90% of MEP BIM roles actually require. It’s fine if you just want a certification to check a box on your resume to get an interview, but it won’t give you the hands-on experience to keep the job once you get it.
Next we looked at Novatr. Their free webinar felt way more corporate—they spent the first 20 minutes doing a sales pitch about their success rate, the instructor rushed through Q&A to stick to the schedule, and Arjun rolled his eyes more than once. The price is much steeper, at 75,000 rupees for a 6-month course that meets three hours a day, which meant Arjun had to cut back his weekly high school tutoring gig to make time. We could only swing it with their 3-month part payment plan.
But the upside matches the higher cost. Novatr updates their curriculum every 3 months, so they cover all the extra tools most firms are asking for now: Dynamo automation, Navisworks coordination, full clash detection work that Kaarwan only mentions in passing. The biggest draw is the live project requirement: Novatr partners with active construction and MEP firms, so students work on actual ongoing projects, not pre-made samples. Meera, who took Novatr’s MEP course last year, got hired by one of their partner firms right after she finished her project, starting at 6 LPA. She said the placement team made her do four mock interviews before sending her out, which was annoying but left her far more prepared than she would’ve been on her own.
The big downside of Novatr is the pace. Arjun did the free trial module, and he said the instructor assumes you already know basic Revit. If you’ve never opened the software before, you’ll be lost within the first 20 minutes. It’s not a good fit for total beginners, no matter what the homepage says.
After all our research, we figured out there’s no universal “better” choice—it all depends on your kid’s current skill level, timeline, and your budget. A few concrete things we did that any family can copy when deciding: first, don’t just trust the testimonials on the website. Search for recent graduates on LinkedIn by course and branch, most will reply honestly because they remember what it’s like to be stuck deciding. Second, always confirm that the course includes a software license—adding that cost on top of tuition can blow your budget fast. Third, ask specifically about placement outcomes for your kid’s branch: Civil results are very different from MEP results, don’t go by the company’s overall average. If your kid is a first or second year with zero BIM experience, Kaarwan is a solid, low-cost way to build a foundation, and you can always upgrade to an advanced course later. If your kid is in their final year, already knows basic Revit from college or an internship, and wants to get placed right after graduation, Novatr is worth the extra cost, especially for MEP.
Arjun ended up signing up for Novatr last month, since he already has basic experience and six months before graduation to finish the course. Some weeks he stays up till 11 PM finishing project assignments, complains that the pace is brutal, and says he should’ve picked the shorter Kaarwan course. Last week, though, he pulled up his work on a 20-story residential complex his group is working on for Novatr’s partner firm, and the lead engineer left a comment saying his model was one of the cleanest a student had turned in all year. We still don’t know if he’ll get the big starting salary they advertise, or if everything will work out exactly the way he wants. There’s no perfect guarantee with any of these courses, no matter what the ads say. But right now, this is the choice that fits our situation, and that’s enough.
