I’ve Been Hunting for a Classroom6x Replacement and It’s Been Way More Annoying Than It Should Be

It’s the stupidest thing to care about, I know. I work a boring remote admin job, I get 30 minutes for lunch every day, and for the last two years, my routine’s been the same: heat up a frozen bean and cheese burrito, eat it while I half-watch a 10 minute YouTube essay about a 2000s kids show, then spend the remaining 20 minutes playing Slope on Classroom6x before my 1 o’clock meeting. I don’t scroll TikTok during that time, it makes my eyes hurt and my brain feel even fuzzier than it already does after a morning of answering emails. Slope’s perfect: it’s just you, a rolling ball, and a never-ending slope that gets faster the longer you go. No notifications, no drama, just mindless, easy zoning out.

Last month, I pulled up my bookmark and got that generic “this site can’t be reached” error. I didn’t think much of it at first — my work VPN blocks random stuff all the time. I toggled it off, cleared my cache, tried incognito, even typed the URL in manually instead of clicking the bookmark. Nothing. I googled it, and turns out the domain expired, no one’s really sure why. Some people on a random forum said the owner got a cease and desist, others said he just graduated college and forgot to pay the $12 a year registration fee. Either way, my little break time spot was gone.

So I started looking for alternatives. The first thing that popped up on Google was classroom7x, right? I got excited, that sounds exactly like it, same naming scheme, must be a clone. I clicked it, and immediately got three pop ups stacked on top of each other: one for a free iPhone giveaway, one for that “meet local singles” garbage, and one that tried to download an .exe to my work laptop. I panicked, clicking the X as fast as I could, and just as I got the last one closed, my Slack notification pinged and my boss’s message about the quarterly budget popped up right over the half-naked local single ad that was still hiding behind the pop up. I was in my home office with the door closed, but still, my heart jumped. If my boss had popped in on a random check-in right then, I’d never have lived it down.

I gave up on Google and turned to Reddit, obviously. Everyone on the unblocked games thread was throwing out suggestions. A lot of people said “just use Cool Math Games!” which is such a boomer take, right? Cool Math Games has been blocked on every corporate and school network I’ve used since 2018. My company’s web filter flags it as “leisure/gaming” immediately, you can’t even get to the homepage. I tried it anyway, just to check, and yep, got the big “this site has been blocked by your network administrator” message. Waste of time.

I asked Jake, the guy on my team who’s been working remote for 10 years and knows every weird corner of the internet for killing time. He sent me a link to something called SchoolHub Games, said he uses it all the time. I pulled it up during my lunch break the next day, and it actually loaded! No pop ups right off the bat, it had Slope, everything. But the whole thing is so janky it’s almost unusable. The text is all misaligned, there’s a banner at the top for a Christmas 2022 giveaway that’s still counting down, and the volume is cranked to 100% by default. I forgot I’d unplugged my headphones earlier that morning when I was on a call with a vendor, so when the game loaded that loud intro jingle blared through my speakers. The neighbor from down the hall who sometimes comes up to borrow sugar was at my front door knocking right then, and I swear she gave me a weird look when I ran to turn it down, like I was watching porn in the middle of a work day instead of a stupid ball game.

I did eventually find a clone that’s almost perfect. It’s called Classroom Elixir, same layout as the original, almost all the same games, not too many pop ups. But something’s just off. The loading bar before the game is the wrong shade of blue, the ad that pops up is for car insurance instead of the weird student discount ads the old one had, and one out of every three times I finish a round, it glitches out and kicks me back to the homepage. It’s fine, I guess. It works enough that I can still get my 20 minutes of zoning out. But it’s like that generic store brand version of your favorite cookie. It’s sweet, it has chocolate chips, but it doesn’t taste the same.

I’ve been thinking about why I care this much, honestly. It’s just a free website. I could use my break to go for a walk, or read a book, or fold laundry that’s been sitting in the dryer for two days. Everyone says you shouldn’t waste your breaks sitting in front of a screen anyway. But some days it’s pouring rain, or my knees ache from walking my dog before work, or I just don’t want to put shoes on and leave the house. I just want 15 minutes where I don’t have to think about budget spreadsheets or RSVPing to my cousin’s wedding or remembering to buy more toilet paper. Is that really too much to ask?

I check the Reddit thread every couple of days, just to see if someone’s posted a new link that actually works. I still haven’t found anything that feels right. I guess that’s just how the internet works, right? All the good little random spots, the ones that don’t try to sell you anything or track your every move, they don’t last forever. The guy who ran Classroom6x didn’t owe me anything, it was free, he did it for fun. I can’t be mad that it’s gone. But I still miss it. And I’m still looking. My cousin sent me a link over Snapchat last night, said his friend runs a new one that’s just like the original. I’ll try it tomorrow at lunch. We’ll see how it goes. (Word count: 1127)
